Dear Casperites, The funding has been approved! I am pleased to announce that the next *CASPER Hardware Porting Workshop* will be held in *South Africa, HartRAO* (Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory, now part of SARAO).
The workshop dates will be from the *8th July - 12th July*, so save the date. Registration will be on Sunday the *7th July. *The workshop ends on the 12th July, but for those staying on site, feel free to depart on the *13th July*. The *attendance fee is free* for all. The SA and African partner *final year/post graduate* *students* that attend will be fully covered for accommodation, food and travel. There is some CASPER funding for overseas travel, but it is very limited. The rest will need to provide for their own accommodation and travel. There is accommodation that exists on site (hostels and there should be container homes) and all food will be covered if staying on site - includes breakfast, dinner and some after snacks and drinks. I will send out a list of all the suggested accommodation in the surrounding area when I receive it. Sponsored students will only be staying on site. The workshop will provide morning tea+snacks, lunch and afternoon tea+snacks. There will be a welcome dinner, tour of HartRAO and evening entertainment arranged! *Did I mention we will be giving away a few sponsored development kits to the best students and non-students? Did I mention goodie bags? :)* The results of the doodle poll indicated that 14 people could attend. I expect that number to increase. We can accommodate a maximum of 40 attendees at this venue, which is a good number for this kind of event, based on past experience. I have also had a few students contact me outside the student poll. In this workshop we will be focusing on toolflow porting tutorials that target the Red Pitaya, but feel free to bring other hardware platforms. I will finalise a list of the supported platforms and software closer to the time. We probably won't be able to support everything, but I will confirm. Alas, this means that ROACH2 and ISE will probably not be supported. In terms of the training venue, there are 40 Ubuntu machines (i3 x 10 and i5 x 30), with 4GB RAM and 500GB Hybrid HDD each. We (SARAO) will provide an extra 4 x beefy machines for compiling purposes, but feel free to bring your own lap tops, if you have one. We will provide ssh and vnc connections to our beefy machines. There is internet (each machine is connected to a 1Gbps Ethernet Switch), but *please note this is a radio quiet zone, so no Wi-Fi - cell phones must be switched off on site!* VMs will be provided for you to copy and take with you - no licenses will be provided though. We will also have many experienced toolflow facilitators (University of Berkeley, SARAO and hopefully others) on hand should you have any questions. There will also be daily presentations to help connect the dots quicker. Okay, *so interested yet?* :).
