i agree with your analysis.
the direct RF sampling option is simpler and has a cleaner signal path
(downconverters could introduce unwanted artifacts, image rejection
problems...).
another lower cost option is to use a pair of snaps, and a pair of adc16
boards, to get 56 inputs.
