We have been watching our Tree Swallows as they have been preparing to
leave. Yesterday two were poking their heads out and the parent was feeding
them. Today, seeing no activity, we checked, and the nest was gone - only a
few pieces of grass left. I did find parts of the nest on the ground
A DOWNY WOODPECKER fledgling comes with its male parent to my 2 suet feeders;
It begs for food and after being fed, while the parent is eating more suet to
feed it again, the fledgling is eating away at the other suet!
What an operator!

Hi Asher,
I suspect that the news isn't good, and that the nest was predated. I
do suggest that you think about attaching predator guards to any nest box
you have. These seem to work quite well for us.

We have now seen at least two swallows and perhaps 3, so I believe all is
well with the birds which were still in the box yesterday. What happened to
the nest remains a mystery.

Late this morning I visited the Von Engeln preserve in Malloryville for the
first time. Neat place. While standing at the kiosk a question mark butterfly
landed on my fingertip and fed for a good two minutes. A good omen, I thought.
Alas my two hands were clasped together at the time, and when
