At 7:45 this evening I was surprised to hear several loud peents in the small
open area along the trail off of Penny Lane before entering the woods towards
the second dam overlook. Have never heard woodcocks here before in my 7 years
living here.

?Hi all,
I walked to home from work. It was beautiful blue sky, though still a bit cold.
I came across a beautiful flock of about 350 Snow Geese flying towards the lake
in the blue sky, at least that is what the intention seemed to be. Some of them
seemed to be reluctant to fly any more, so
I went up to the N. Montezuma WMA today looking for SANDHILL CRANES, which I
found. Saw 2 in looking north from Morgan Rd.; probably the usual pair. Then
drove to the east end of VanDyne Spoor Rd. Had to park at the pavement end and
walk in; looked too formidable for my 4WD truck. As I
While shoveling my driveway last evening (March 18) I saw about 500 Snow Geese
flying east towards the north end of Cayuga Lake. Later I heard the trill of a
Eastern Screech Owl off and on for about 20 minutes.

Snow Geese have been passing over West Danby all day.
At 3:00 I heard some remote croaks, and looked up to see a kettle of ten Ravens
riding a thermal upward.
My local Raven pair is also very active, quite vocal and often flying close
together.

Migrating geese, both SNOW CANADA, continued over Ithaca yesterday (Wed 18
Mar) despite NW winds. Perhaps the winds are less unfavorable close to West
Hill at my place.
In the evening I saw several flocks of northbound blackbirds. Although my only
postive IDs were COMMON GRACKLES my suspicion
Had another even larger flock of blackbirds. There were mostly Grackles but I
found four Red-Wing Blackbirds mixed in. FOS for me. I also heard a Robin
singing. Spring must be coming!

A pleasant noon-hour by the observatory. Bright sun and no wind. I was there
from 11:45 til 1:15, and it was basically a slow time. One migrating Northern
Harrier and several local TV’s, Red-tails, and Rough-leggeds. Thousands of
distant Canada and Snow Geese, mainly to the west. A couple of
Great pictures but what were they thinking ? Probably a triangle love affair

Late yesterday afternoon around 6 PM there was a steady movement of Grackles in
small flocks over my house. All heading west just at treetop level. The
conditions may be marginal but Spring waits for no one.

Hi all,
A couple interesting things in Tompkins County recently. Local birder Dan
Otis alerted me to the presence of a GREAT HORNED OWL nest on the Newman
Municipal Golf Course. The birds are nesting in an old Red-tailed Hawk nest
in a tall tree in the middle of the course. It's quite high up and
