Today, 8/5/13, my Dad and my Mom accompanied me to Hammond Hill SF. A few feet
from the "Snowplow Turnaround" sign on Star Stanton Hill, we heard
many warbler calls coming from the dense woods. Entering the forest, we
instantly we got great glimpses at a threesome of BLACK-THROATED-GREEN
WARBLERS.
Susie & I spent 1.5 hrs. at the large parking lot at the end of the paved
portion of Hammond Hill Rd., hoping for goshawk courtship displays. The
goshawks did not show there, but a pair of RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS emerged from
the woods. One did a series of steep dives and calls before drifting to th

Steve, what is the loop you walk?
Just to clarify, crow begging right now indicates a breeding female on a
nest, not fledged young. A couple of our nests should
ng in late May or June.

I took my usual loop walk around Star St
I took my usual loop walk around Star Stanton and Hammond Hills early this
morning. High winds and occasional snow flurries. Very few birds. But a
couple highlights: a male PURPLE FINCH sang from the top of a spruce. It
sang a continuous odd jumble of notes and short phrases, quite unlike the
I walked about in Hammond Hill SF early this morning. A singing
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and 11 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS were the highlights for the
little birds.
About 0830, I finally spied 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS spiraling up together, and
noted 2 more courtship behaviors (according to Stokes' "Guide to
A walk in Hammond Hill SF this morning (10:45-12) didn't turn up the
Winter Wrens that I was hoping to see, but there were a good number of
Ruby-crowned Kinglets around. My complete eBird list is below.
