[cayugabirds-l] SWANS and geese over Sapsucker Woods
I'l surprised Jay McGowan didn't post this, but around noon, as the tens of thousands of geese were passing over "Mt. Sapsucker:" on the slope above the Fuller Wetlands, a group of 19 TUNDRA SWANS passed overhead in a flock of geese. I believe these were my first ever at Sapsucker Woods. In the brief period I watched, we had a single CACKLING GOOSE, and only 3 SNOW GEESE, plus a flock of COMMON GRACKLES -- I'm sure Jay had much more. [cayugabirds-l] SNOW GEESE
Larry and I took advantage of the nice day and took a trip around the lake, going up East side and down West side. By far the most impressive sight was the tens of thousands of SNOW GEESE plainly visible and near to shore from the junction of NYS Route 89 and the southern junction of Lower Lake Road (North end of Cayuga Lake). Briefly the geese were spooked and some of them left the water heading one direction, and another group headed the opposite direction before all settled down again, but it made for a magnificent color of white and black. We looked for Ross's, but there were just too many geese to scan through to determine if there were any. Continuing in a southerly direction, we saw 2 more large flocks of Snow Geese out on the water, but they paled in comparison to the thousands we were able to view up close--right by the shoreline. All day long we saw huge flocks of CANADA'S and SNOW GEESE flying over. We also spotted huge flocks of RED WING BLACK BIRDS, and COMMON GRACKLES by E. Tyer Rd. and Lay Rd just south of the NYS Thruway. The usual ducks were still on the lake at various spots we stopped, and we did not see any Western Grebe. -- Sara Jane Hymes -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [cayugabirds-l] Canada Geese migrating
Tim Lenz and I spent half and hour walking around Sapsucker Woods. We had about 7000 Canada Geese pass overhead in all. We found three CACKLING GEESE among them. One lone bird as soon as we stepped out of the building, in a low group of about 50 birds, and a pair in a group of about 125 birds. There weren't many land birds to speak of, but there were 4 Red-winged Blackbirds at the feeders and a Red-tailed Hawk that swooped towards us and kept following us around the trails. You have no idea. I had flocks of geese going over Brooktondale at 0730. Susie & I got to Mt. Pleasant at 0930 and stayed for 2.5 hours. A lot of SNOW GEESE early; mostly CANADAS for the last hour. [cayugabirds-l] Reminder: Scott Weidensaul at tonight's Monday Night Seminar
February 27, 7:30-9:00 PM Messing Around with Birds (for Fun and Science) Join naturalist Scott Weidensaul for a lighthearted exploration of his many avian research projects, from banding hawks and tiny saw-whet owls to studying the migration of western hummingbirds that aren't supposed to be in the East in December (but are). Best of all, learn how anyone with some enthusiasm and time can make important contributions to the science and conservation of birds, and have a great time doing it. Weidensaul is the author of more than two dozen books on natural history, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist "Living on the Wind," about bird migration, and "Return to Wild America: A Yearlong Search for the Continent's Natural Soul." His newest book, "The First Frontier: The Forgotten History of Struggle, Savagery and Endurance in Early America," will be published in February 2012. Weidensaul writes for such publications as Audubon, Nature Conservancy and National Wildlife, and lives in the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania. ** Charles Eldermire Public Education Outreach Associate Manager, Sapsucker Woods & Johnson Visitors' Center Cornell Lab of Ornithology 159 Sapsucker Woods Rd.
