[cayugabirds-l] oops?!!

2012-03-28 Thread Mark Miller
Okay, just had to comment! I was at MWR (visitor center) last weekend when a
lady came in with a report of a Smew by mud lock (thanks to Linda B. for
checking it out), now a report of lots of Cinnamon Teal at MWR? Well the Smew
turned into an old Long-tailed duck decoy that had floated away and the teal
are actually Green-winged Teal (well they do have cinnamon coloring on the
head). Thanks for keeping us on are toes! lol.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Why do birds sing to themselves?

2012-03-28 Thread geokloppel

> Are they practicing their songs?

Musicians usually make a distinction between practice and rehearsal. Practicing
is about learning the nuts and bolts; rehearsing comes later, and is about
preparing for impending performance.

To the extent that young birds need to learn their songs and how to sing them,
I guess you could call their soto voce work "practicing". But birds that
already have the nuts and bolts down cold may still spend some days or weeks
warming up for the biggest performance of their lives, and that would probably
be better described as rehearsal.

[cayugabirds-l] Why do birds sing to themselves?

2012-03-28 Thread Evan Barrientos
For the last 5 minutes there's been an adult male Dark-eyed Junco just 8ft away
from me foraging on the ground outside Mann Library on Cornell Campus.
Sporadically, he's been quietly singing to himself while he forages, but so
quietly that nothing further than 10ft away could hear. The bird is also alone.
I've seen other birds do this before on occasion, such as American Robins, but
I don't know why? Are they practicing their songs? Anyone have an answer?
Thanks,
Evan B

There was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker giving its "wah" call a few times as I
walked into work here at Sapsucker Woods this morning (28 March 2012). The bird
was calling from the patch of woods just south of the outer parking lot, on the
east side of the road.

Also in the early arrivals category, there was a singing Winter Wren at

[cayugabirds-l] World Premier: Release of Calif. Condor in AZ

2012-03-28 Thread John Confer
On Thursday, the World Premier of a film on the release of California
Condors in northern Arizona will be shown at Cinemopolis at 7:00. Matt
Podolsky, a former Ithaca College student, and co-producer Eddie Chung
will present their film with discussion following. The film is described
below. I strongly recommend it - John Confer

*"Scavenger Hunt,"* a feature length documentary about California condor
recovery and the issue of lead poisoning, will WORLD PREMIERE at the
Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival on March 29^th , 7pm at
Cinemapolis in Ithaca, NY.

Producer/Directors, Eddie Chung and Matthew Podolsky will be available
for interviews March 28-31, 2012 in Ithaca, NY.

ITHACA -- The producers of the feature length documentary film,
/Scavenger Hunt: An Unlikely Union/ have chosen the Finger Lakes
Environmental Film Festival in Ithaca, NY for their world premiere
screening event. The film follows a group of biologists working in remote
Northern Arizona as they attempt to re-introduce the endangered
California condor into this desert landscape.Lead poisoning is just
about the only thing holding this recovery effort back from being a
complete success, and /Scavenger Hunt/ addressed this issue head-on,
with interviews outlining all sides of the issue.

First-time filmmaker and Ithaca College alum Matthew Podolsky produced
and co-directed this film with veteran filmmaker Eddie Chung (/The
Achievers: the Story of the Lebowski Fans/).

Matthew graduated from Ithaca College in 2006 with a double major in
Environmental Studies and Cinema/Photography and began working with
California condors as a biologist in 2007.Matthew worked on the condor
recovery program for nearly four years before founding his own not for
profit production company and produce a film that exposes the truth
behind the issue of lead poisoning in wildlife.

The Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival was an easy choice for this
world premiere screening because of Matthew's association with Ithaca
College.Matthew was heavily influenced as a filmmaker by FLEFF
screenings which he attended as a student, and the focus that FLEFF
places on community development fits very well with the issues addressed
in /Scavenger Hunt/.

Cheers,
John Confer

[cayugabirds-l] Birding in the Cayuga Lake Basin

2012-03-28 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Anne Marie, Bob, Karen and Marie,

We picked up a copy while at MNWR yesterday (not much happening less a Golden
Eagle
adult) and are very impressed. EAsy to use and comprehensive it will be of
immense
value to birders unfamiliar and familiar with the area. Thanks for your fine
work on
this most unique bird finding guide.

My only quibble would be that you left out Henslow's Sparrow and N. Harrier as
breeders under the FLNF description. Barred Owl is only found within the SW
Seneca
Lake watershed side of the forest and then is very uncommon. Short-eared Owls
have
become quite rare in the forest pastures and non-existent most winters.

Best,
John
