RE: [cayugabirds-l] Grasshopper Sparrow v. mowing near airport
I think it is great idea Dave! We should convince airport authority about mowing! Once upon a time (it feels like long ago, but about 10 years ago) there used to be many Grasshopper Sparrows in the area now called with fancy road names such as Triphammer Terrace, Placid Terrace, Aspen Way etc. used to be nice grassland, before the mega houses moved in. Even now they have lot of lawn area, only if it was intact grassland instead of lawn probably Grasshopper sparrows might have managed to live with humans! I have not been in that area in some years now. Would be curious to see how they are morphed in last few years. meena Meena Haribal Ithaca NY 14850 http://haribal.org/ http://meenaharibal.blogspot.com/ From: bounce-61034533-3493...@list.cornell.edu [bounce-61034533-3493...@list.cornell.edu] on behalf of Dave Nutter [nutter.d...@me.com] Sent: Friday, June 01, 2012 9:44 PM To: CAYUGABIRDS-L Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Grasshopper Sparrow v. mowing near airport Considering that Grasshopper Sparrow is listed by NYSDEC as a Species of Special Concern, http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7494.html I wonder can we convince the Tompkins County Airport, which owns the field on the southwest corner of Warren and Cherry not to mow that field until July. Would that be late enough for the Grasshopper Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow and Eastern Meadowlark which were singing there today to finish breeding? Would the Lab of O be willing to support this? Would the Cayuga Bird Club support this? I don't think the field is used for hay, so there shouldn't be an economic or agriculture issue. --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basicshttp://www.northeastbirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME Rules and Informationhttp://www.northeastbirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES Subscribe, Configuration and Leavehttp://www.northeastbirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm Archives: The Mail Archivehttp://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html Surfbirdshttp://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds BirdingOnThe.Nethttp://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBirdhttp://ebird.org/content/ebird/! -- -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

When crows get to chatting I always thought Parliament of Cows was more descriptive and it applies to Barred Owls also. [cayugabirds-l] MNWR 6/2 Hudsonian Godwit Wilson's Phalarope
Hi, I stopped at the visitor's center, auto loop, May's Point, and Tschache Pool this morning. Still had a good variety of shorebirds and an impressive variety of ducks including 1 Northern Shoveler, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Ring-neck Ducks, 4 Redhead, Gadwall and 7 Ruddy Ducks at Tschache. Both the Godwit and Phalarope were still at the Shorebird Flats / Benning Marsh area. Also saw lots of peeps, Dunlin and both yellowlegs. There were two birds that I took to be large peeps at May's Point that went unidentified. [cayugabirds-l] MWR
Didn't see the phalarope, but Hudsonian Godwit is still at Benning Marsh (about 9 AM), also had a pair of Spotted Sandpipers at Benning. Tschache Pool had a Great Egret in the tree next to the tower, Towpath (very muddy) had a lot of ducks, GB herons, and shorebirds (on the far side). Had a pair of Yellow-billed Cuckoos near the dike between Knox-marsellus Puddlers. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Lawrence's Warbler Lindsay Parsons
There is a female Lawrence's Warbler at Lindsay Parsons. It is just before you enter the woods before you cross railroad tracks on the blue trail (basically the end of the fields if you are going to cross railroad to head into woods on east side of railroad). Common Gallinule/Laughing Moorhen still at lake on far side. I'll post photos when I have a chance. [cayugabirds-l] Ulysses Bald Eagle nest progress
This evening I again biked out NYS-89 to check on the BALD EAGLE nest near the Glenwood Pines restaurant in the Town of Ulysses. I saw no adults, but the two youngsters are out of the nest and into the branches of the nest tree. One bird (perhaps larger, therefore female) was rather sedentary, perched near the nest, picking at its talons with its bill and seldom opening its wings. The other bird (smaller, I think, therefore male) was quite active, "fluttering" from branch to branch. On my way home I stopped at Treman Marine Park. Most of the time I was there one OSPREY stood sentinel atop one of the well-designed perching poles above the platform while its mate sat tight on the nest. For awhile one of them flew off toward the lake, but I didn't see which bird, nor did I see whether it brought back food or switched places on its return, nor could I see the gender of the bird(s) on the perch. I didn't spend a long time there, but did not see any evidence of feeding young. Anyone who does see that there are hatchlings there, please say so.Another highlight was seeing a female COMMON MERGANSER with 4 merglings out on the lake.--Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --
[cayugabirds-l] Eastern screech owls hunting
Tonight has proven very exciting as a pair of a screech owls have been buzzing our windows picking off moths. They continued to hunt from perches in trees very close to our home. We got great views of them hunting from inside. I definitely heard a screech owl calling, though it was hard to tell if it was coming from 1 of these 2 birds, or a more distant 3rd bird. It could have possibly been a 3rd, but we don't know for sure. We heard them calling often during winter, but not for a while until tonight. Needless to say, we are thrilled with tonight's entertainment.
