[cayugabirds-l] Cedar Waxwing nest

2012-08-22 Thread Robyn Bailey
Yesterday evening, I unexpectedly found a nest of Cedar Waxwings near my
mailbox. There were 3 babies being fed by both parents. I watched a few
feedings and found it especially cute when one of the chicks lifted up its tail
to reveal the yellow-orange stripe on the edge. After a few feeding trips, mom
settled down on the chicks and brooded them; I guessed they were done for the
night, so I left.

Enlivened by that, I walked a little further down the railroad tracks by
Cargill and saw 2 Yellow Warblers, a female Kingfisher, 1 Yellow-rumped
Warbler, and a handful of Robins which were feasting on ripe cherries in a
Black Cherry tree. Those are the highlights, but complete checklist is
herehttp://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11420337.

- Comments: Juv plumage. Observed 20 min around 10 until it flew and
showed white rump and wing stripe. Then lost in heat shimmers. Obvious
secured bill. A bit smaller than adjacent pecs. Scalloped brownish back and
brownish wash on upper breast, especially towards sides of upper breast.
Plain whitish belly. Could not be sure of leg color because of distance and
mud on legs of birds. Rump white all the way across clearly visible in
flight.

[cayugabirds-l] Brooktondale Nighthawk

2012-08-22 Thread Annette Nadeau
At about 6 o'clock this evening a single COMMON NIGHTHAWK flew over my yard
here in Brooktondale. It was flying in a southerly direction. I believe that's
new for my yard list!

Also this evening one of the GREEN HERONS and what appears to be a family of
WOOD DUCKS are on the pond,

Annette Nadeau
