[cayugabirds-l] Good Morning for Birds
I, too, have now seen the flock of Bohemian Waxwings at the corner of Sapsucker Woods Rd near Rt. 13. When I was there, they were about due SW from the curve of the road, and about 10 m away from it. I got the info on the flock early, when I stopped to talk to Kevin McGowan about a Peregrine Falcon that had overflown me near the Frog Barn, 91 Sapsucker Woods Rd. It flew from E to W, across the road to the area near the western gate to the preserve. -Pete _ Pete Marchetto Engineering Physicist, CLO/BRP Grad Student, BEE 1.607.254.6281 Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch, who watches over you. RE:[cayugabirds-l] Bohemian Waxwings
The waxwings are currently on Sapsucker Woods Road between 13 and Kip's Barn. Right now there's a large batch of cars marking the spot and a few scopes on the birds. They are pretty far into the thicket at eye level in a mixed flock (both Cedars and Bohemians), sometimes flying in and out of a nearby pine. They are very active. With some patience, you can get good looks with binoculars or scopes. [cayugabirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing viewing
Just a reminder that it's probably not a great idea to stand in the middle of Sapsucker Woods Rd. with your back to the traffic coming off of Route 13 and around a blind curve (especially as a sizable group), while trying to get a look at the waxwings. I believe there's plenty of room on the shoulder or just off it on the grass to view them. -Scott --- *Scott Haber* Digital Content Manager Cornell Lab of Ornithology Ithaca, NY *sa...@cornell.edu (607)254-1102* -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] First C. Loon Great Gully Eagle nest
Off former Union Springs Castelli's Marina I saw our 1st C. LOON for this spring. I also saw the BALD EAGLE nest in a tall tree west of Great Gully Rd. along the lake shore. Saw no bird in that nest but believe an eagle was in a tree farther south near what appears to be another nest. Not certain about either. There is no other place that I know of to see the nest other than either side of the white farm house across from the state marker. I do not recommend driving on the private roads. Our ospreys on No. One Rd. have added a fair pile of sticks on their platform despite the wind. I saw them both on Mon. really hunkered down, faces to the west wind, looking miserable cold. Saw my 1st song sparrow this a.m.. Female N. FLICKER was at the suet again. Nice to see the kestral near Half Acre. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl
Much to my surprise, there was a Short-eared Owl perched on a fence post along my driveway as I headed out this noon. It sat there calmly while I took pictures from about 30m away. Eventually it dropped to the ground and remained there until I flushed it several hours later when going to look for pellets. This is well up on Snyder Hill Rd. [cayugabirds-l] Great Gully Rte 90 ... Eagle nest
Should have put that the eagle nest is seen from Rte. 90 at Great Gully Rd. where I parked then walked north about 200 ft. to set up my scope. I also parked by the guard rail a bit south of the white farm house for another view. [cayugabirds-l] bohemian waxwings
I just saw (about 7 pm April 4th) 9 Bohemian Waxwings hanging out in the top of a white ash tree on Eastman Hill. I didn't see any cedar waxwings with them. [cayugabirds-l] Barn Swallows
A friend of mine, Tim Dorn, lives on the west side of the lake, by Buttonwood Winery, and has Barn Swallows nesting on his dock every year. A few of the early arrivals were back on Monday the 1st hawking some unseen insects. I don't know if they had been reported yet.
