[cayugabirds-l] Nashville still
Nothing new around my place this morning, unless the Nashville Warbler I came across is a fresh arrival (I didn't see any yesterday), but the encouragement I took from yestereve's summer-like chorus is still with me: Hermit Thrushes, Winter Wrens and Blue-headed Vireos were in their accustomed places; Wood Thrushes sang from all directions - they've really arrived in force! This morning the multiple Hooded Warblers had set up separate territories - 3 or 4 in the usual places along the course of a 1500' walk. I was hoping for Canada Warblers today, but no sign of them yet. I still have a Brown Thrasher apparently claiming territory. From the sound of things, the young Ravens will soon be - may already be - out of their nest. [cayugabirds-l] Observations of bird/wasp interactions
Dear bird listers, I study the behavioral ecology of local yellowjackets, and have always wondered which bird species are responsible for the destruction of so many young colonies in late May and early June. I'm most curious about predators of aerial-nesting yellowjackets and bald-faced hornets (http://wiki.bugwood.org/HPIPM:Baldfaced_Hornet), but would love to hear anecdotes and observations about birds interacting with ground-nesting yellowjackets, as well as paper wasps. I recall a year or two ago, someone posted a description of crows knocking down an adult bald-faced hornet nest. What an dramatic event to witness! If you have any stories, please send them my way. Hello Reid, I am not going on the field trip but am heading over to the Lab of O by 7:30 to lead the public walk there. I could pick you up. Is it possible for you to get to Robert Purcell Union by 7:10? Or tell me what works. [cayugabirds-l] Tricolored heron
Was in a tree near the canal boat tie up on the Seneca Trail off of Wildlife Drive at 3pm this afternoon. It was quite active and flew across to trail side and was sitting in a tree right near the trail. Beautiful bird and worth the trip. I was doing a Northern Harrier survey for the refuge and there were many shorebirds on the draining Main Pool. Least Sandpiper and Dunlin many Yellowlegs and Spotted Sandpipers I’m sure there was much more but it was raining and I was looking for Harriers.
