[cayugabirds-l] Water management at MNWR Main Pool and Tschache Pool for 2011
Here is a statement from Linda Ziemba, Wildllife Biologist at MNWR, concerning water management at Montezuma this summer: Draining the Main Pool in 2010 resulted in lush vegetative growth that will continue to provide food and cover for wildlife this year. We intend to keep water in this impoundment through 2011 to provide emergent marsh habitat for migrating waterfowl and breeding marshbirds. We are experimenting with techniques to continue restoring the Dry Marsh while keeping water in the Main Pool for wildlife. Tschache Pool has not been drained in a while and therefore largely consists of open water, which is not ideal for many wildlife species. Weather permitting, Tschache Pool will be drained this spring to provide habitat for northbound shorebirds and to promote vegetative growth. If possible, the area will be reflooded in the fall to provide high quality habitat for southbound waterfowl. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Surf Scoter Tree Swallows, rumors of Black Scoter Eurasian Wigeons
Hi all, I've posted a photo of the Black Scoter in Canoga here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/seabamirum/5544385845/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/seabamirum/5544385845/Was certainly surprised to see it; but now I'm disappointed that I didn't see the Surf Scoter, which has been a tougher bird for me in recent years. Other highlights from yesterday were the adult NORTHERN SHRIKE at the Railroad Rd. Marsh, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at both Tschache Pool and Dean's Cove (the latter vocalizing!), and a PEREGRINE FALCON in the snag overlooking Fall Creek at Stewart Park. On Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 8:20 PM, Dave Nutter nutter.d...@me.com wrote: When Tim Lenz sent out an RBA about a Black Scoter seen from Lower Lake Road in Bridgeport, Ann Mitchell I decided to detour that direction. We found lots of waterfowl and excellent viewing conditions. There was flat water, no shimmer, and the birds were not blocking the view of each other. However they were swimming back and forth, and some were sleeping, and some were diving, and lots were flying in and out of the area near Lower Lake Rd and NYS-89, which was all a bit distracting. We did not find Tim's first year male Black Scoter, but we did find a female SURF SCOTER among the Aythya (all 5 species), American Wigeon, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, Snow Geese, etc. Tim also mentioned a Eurasian Wigeon he'd seen distantly from the Cayuga Lake State Park boat ramp, and we missed that, too, but we did meet a fellow who said he'd seen one at Stewart Park around 11:30 this morning, so keep an eye out for that. On our way home along NYS-89 just south of the Fayette-Varick town line we saw at least 5 TREE SWALLOWS flying around the barns of a farm. --Dave Nutter -- Tim Lenz t...@cornell.edu Web Applications Developer Cornell Lab of Ornithology -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey- Knox-Marcellus Marsh
Yesterday afternoon, while scanning the large numbers of No.Pintail and Canada Geese at Knox-Marcellus marsh from East Road at Montezuma Joann picked out an Osprey soaring directly above us then off to the SE. 2 Tree swallows and a pair of Wood Ducks were there also. At around 4:30 all the Snow Geese at the rte. 31 muck lands lifted off and about 5000 (basically 10 groups of 500) flew west over us leaving probably 10-15M landing back on the muck lands. We couldn't see any smaller geese or White-fronted but there were about 40 Blue Geese mixed in. Large numbers of waterfowl especially Ring-necked Ducks were on the Northern Complex flooded areas and ponds. Up at the East Bay Marsh Unit along East Bay Road in Huron there were 5 Great Blue Herons working on their nests. First day of spring!! Mike and Joann Tetlow p.s. extensive mudflats developing on Tschache Pool with 1 killdeer ( I don't know why they are drawing it down). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
