[cayugabirds-l] Egg on the face? Or eat crow?

2012-02-16 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Either is appropriate because Becky erred in her identification of a Snowy
Owl at the Outlet Mall & because I sent it to the list.

She was near tears when she called to tell me on her way from Rochester. Asks
for forgiveness of anyone who tried to find it.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park treat

2012-02-16 Thread Dave Nutter
Late this afternoon I stopped by Stewart Park. From the shelter of my car I scoped across many of the usual waterfowl on the rotting ice, a few on the water, and some in between crawling among the mounds of frozen mud once kicked-up by storm waves. As I panned, a surprise appeared in the foreground of my view: on a dead tree which has been stuck offshore since last spring's floods, perched atop the tallest branch was an adult PEREGRINE FALCON. It was ruffled and soggy in today's rain, but those huge yellow feet are not to be messed with. These snags add so much to the habitat, and in a form which I find pleasing to the eye. Had the light been brighter I would have been alerting photographers. Also present were several pairs of AMERICAN WIGEON and AMERICAN BLACK DUCK on the ice among the numerous CANADA GEESE and MALLARDS, several AMERICAN COOTS on the dike of mud-ice, numerous COMMON MERGANSERS and a pair of RING-NECKED DUCKS swimming just beyond, and 1 RUDDY DUCK swimming alone out in the lake. Among gulls I only picked out the usual RING-BILLED, HERRING and GREAT BLACK-BACKED.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] OUTLET SNOWY OWL STILL THERE

2012-02-16 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Our daughter, Becky Sewell, again took a friend to Roch. today. She had Lisa
call about 40 minutes ago on their way west to say she had seen the SNOWY in
the same place but a bit lower in the tree than yesterday. Becky & Lisa plan to
get off the Thruway on their return trip to try to get closer to the owl by the
log house.

I returned today to try to find the owner of the Frontenac Harbor to ask
permission to walk there to look for birds. Didn't find anyone.
In my 2.10.12 post I called it Frontenac Marine. Sorry. Senior moment!

Today at Frontenac Park was a raft of perhaps 500 redheads. At the outlet
stream from Factory St. pond were well over 100 mallards in the shallows. Only
once in our 20 winters here have I seen the lake level this low. Normally we
would have a lot of snow melt & the mid-winter rains to keep it higher.

Factory St. pond has been devoid of feathers for the past wk. with the
exception of one gadwall last wk.. No screechie. Buffles & redheads are on Mill
pond with an occasional gadwall. Didn't have time to go north to look for the
many swans & large rafts of ducks seen last wk.. Canadas & snows are flying in
every direction so maybe late goose season has started & that's why so many
mallards are here.

I just saw about a doz. DE Juncoes under the feeders & in the grass around the
garden. Mocker (mocking bird) is defending his territory. We've had the 7
member crow family all winter, checking to see what goodies I throw on the
garden.

[cayugabirds-l] White-winged TV

2012-02-16 Thread Robyn Bailey
Today over lunch, Anne Marie and I saw the white-winged Turkey Vulture from the
staff lounge of CLO. It coasted over Sapsucker Woods Pond a few times before
disappearing. Both of us were seeing it for the first time; it looked like one
wing had been dipped halfway in some bleach. Was in the company of another,
normal-looking, TV.

Best,
Robyn Bailey

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe at East Shore Park

2012-02-16 Thread Donna Scott
Thanks, Brad!

I arrived at E. Shore Park an hour after your posting and was able to see the
Western Grebe in the distance towards that bluish-gray piling with a light that
is north from the red lighthouse.
The W. Grebe was still close enough to see with just binocs. It stood up in the
water and flapped its wings, then a few minutes later, flew a bit towards
Stewart Park.

All the photos people have posted helped me to identify the bird.

I drove over to the park to get a different view, but did not see it again even
though I went from one end to the other. Maybe it went into the Inlet?

thanks again, it is a life bird for me!

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe at East Shore Park

2012-02-16 Thread Meena Haribal
This repeated sighting of a single grebe vs. two grebes together makes me think
there are/were three birds on the lake.
But I must also say this, past Saturday I was sitting at Myers and watching
bird movements, some seemed very random, but I watched lots of Common
Mergansers head to south-end of the lake and they were flying quite high and
sometimes not visible without binoculars, but they seemed to be heading further
south than stopping at Myers. I saw several groups with total of more than 150
birds. My thought was the that the north end was getting frozen, so birds moved
to south end of the lake. It would take them an hour plus if they flew 30 to
40 miles an hour. So the grebes probably can also do this.
Yesterday afternoon I was home for an errand and I too heard a Bluebird singing
in the yard from top of a Norway maple!
Today at the bus stop near East Hill Plaza, I heard robin's chuck chucking, but
could not see any robins and then I realized a pair of starlings were engaged
in romantic moments and one of the starling was making that sound. That was
very cool!

In spite of the gloomy weather, a male bluebird is singing brightly in our
