[cayugabirds-l] Enormous Aythya Raft continues north of Union Springs.

2012-02-18 Thread daven1024
Thousands and thousands of Aythya sp. continue. Best viewed by taking access
road along railroad tracks that cross rte 90. Mostly redhead, lots of
canvasback, some scaup sp. Also american widgeon. Western grebe not found but
would be needle in haystack.

[cayugabirds-l] Birding Sunday

2012-02-18 Thread Kathy Strickland

Just wondering if anyone is birding around the lake, or up here at the north
end tomorrow (Sunday). I have a rare Sunday off and would like to hook up with
a group or individual to bird for whatever part of the day would work out. You
may email me privately or call me (315-730-4451). Kathy Strickland, Union

[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Lake St Park, Sodus Point

2012-02-18 Thread Mark Miller
Quick notes on Seneca Lake St Park for Sat AM. Bald Eagle (mature) is still
hanging out across the canal from the marina, Am Wigeon, C. Goldeneye, C.
Mergansers, Bufflehead, Mallards, Black Ducks all present. Couple swans too far
out for an ID. No sign of the Egyptian Goose.

Sodus Pt pier (1 PM), lots and lots of Long-tailed Ducks but not much else. A
few WW Scoters out past the end of the pier and a few RB Mergansers about. Only
a few RB Gulls flying around. Did see the King Eider (female) near the end of
the east pier, just before very dark clouds moved in about 2 PM it started
storming.

[cayugabirds-l] East Side of Cayuga Lake Saturday 18 Feb 2012

2012-02-18 Thread david nicosia
Took a trip with my birding pals, Dan Watkins, Jon Weeks
and Rich Youket to the east side of Cayuga Lake.

First stop was Stewart park for the WESTERN GREBE and
we found it pretty quicklydistant...but seen well in a scope.
Also seen well from East Park. We also had 2 RED-THROATED
LOONS with a distant COMMON LOON. Stewart also had
many AMERICAN COOTS, 1 RUDDY DUCK, the 3 typical
gull sp. The DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT that has been
present for the winter was there. There were also many COMMON
GOLDENEYES. Also present were AMERICAN WIGEON,
GADWALL, MALLARD, BLACK DUCK, COMMON and
HOODED MERGANSERS. I probably forgot a few. But
nothing additional that was unusual.

Next stop beside East Park, where we basically got different views
of the WESTERN GREBE, was Myer's Point. Not much unusual
there. All 3 sp. of Gulls, many COMMON GOLDENEYEs,
MALLARDS and BLACK DUCK. There was a small flock
of AMERICAN PIPITs on the gravel bars that were flying
back and forth between Myer's and Salt Point. At Salt Point
got a nice view of a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER that Jon
Weeks found initially. The bird was fairly close to shore and
easy to see even with binoculars.

Next stop was Long Point State Park. Not much there
except loads of COMMON GOLDENEYES. Best
birds at this location was a nice pair of RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERs.

From Aurora Bay, we had only 1 HORNED GREBE,
many COMMON GOLDENEYES and One NORTHERN
PINTAIL. We counted 298 AMERICAN COOTS!!!
There were also a few distant COMMON LOONS.

Next stop was north of the Twin Orchard Campground
where there was an enormous aythya raft that
we estimated around 20,000. I shot a video of the
raft and uploaded it to my flickr site. I also shot many
pictures. We estimate around 60% REDHEAD, 25%
CANVASBACK and the rest around 15% SCAUP sp.
and others. There was also a several RING-NECKED
DUCKS.

Some photos and a video of this spectacle can be found
here... |

A few select photos from the trip here...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/davenicosia/sets/72157629378989695/

We had an awesome time and totaled 57 species!!
Not bad for February.

[cayugabirds-l] RFI: Pileated woodpecker

2012-02-18 Thread Marie P Read
Naomi's posting reminded me to put out this request for information. I'm
looking to photograph and video Pileated Woodpecker for an upcoming multi-media
project. If anyone knows of/finds a regularly-used Pileated feeding channel in
a treetrunk, or better yet a nest later in the spring, I'd really appreciate
hearing about it. As always, I offer a nice print as a reward should the
photography prove successful.

Thanks very much!

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Pileated woodpecker

From 2:30 to 3 p.m. today I watched a good-sized male Pileated Woodpecker just
back of my house. He was tearing apart a pile of rotted logs that have been
there for years. He worked his way along the side and nearly under when a gray
squirrel came sauntering along down the side hill and too close to Mr.
Woodpecker. There was quite a flurry as the woodpecker tilted back, wings
outspread and with his feet let Mr. squirrel have it ! The squirrel left the
area fast and the woodpecker continued his search for a good meal. I often see
the Pileated, sometimes 2 or 3 as there is a woods back of my house and old
trees in front along the lakeshore. Cardinals and Carolina wrens are singing
loud and clear now. The Robins that have stayed here this “winter” will be
heading back to Newfoundland to nest and the ones that went further south will
be coming back to us soon. It has been a joy to have them around whichever way
they are going.

[cayugabirds-l] Pileated Wdpkr and Carolina Wren make backyard rounds for GBBC

2012-02-18 Thread Nari Mistry
A Pileated Woodpecker flew in and made the rounds of our backyard as we
were observing for the GBBC today.
A Carolina Wren also showed up again after weeks, singing all around the
backyard, celebrating the count weekend. A Bluebird has been singing for
several days.
The lone Redpoll has not been seen since last Sunday-- we're hoping it
is still around.
