I went to Myers Monday afternoon 4:30 - 5:40 pm and didn't see the Loons, but 
did see all the Swallows Ann mentioned, 
as well as the Pipits, plus 2 Killdeer, a lovely Green Heron, 12 Herring Gulls, 
a Kingfisher, a Savannah Sparrow with a very yellow face, a Common Merganzer 
male, 4 Coots, 4 Mallards, 4-5 Turkey Vultures, A. Crows, and lots of A. Robins 
and blackbirds.
Two House Sparrows were taking over a couple Purple Martin houses.

As walking on Wilson Trail clockwise. I had just passed the wooden bird blind 
when I spotted a  RUFFED GROUSE on the trail  right by the gate that goes to 
outdoor eating area for employees. It was walking along the trail heading away 
from me towards the gate. 

I was able to alert Kevin & Jay McGowan and they along with Brad Walker & Livia 
Santana were able to see it . It reappeared on the same section of the trail 
this time heading towards the blind. 

It had a nice little ruff.  Can someone convince the grouse to make a 
reappearance  when I lead the Saturday Morning beginner bird walk at SSW?

Also, we should keep on an eye on Meena's singing Summerhill WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS. I'm convinced 
they nested there in March-April 2001, but better evidence would make them
a confirmed basin breeder 
for the first time! -- Figured I'd pass that little bit of basin history
on.

[cayugabirds-l] Fish Crows/Siskins/Chippies

Hello all,

FISH CROWS continue in Cortland, 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS were under my feeders
this morning, and PINE 
SISKINS are nesting at just about every state forest in CNY this year. 
It's the best siskin nesting year in CNY 
since 2004. FWIW: Siskins have nesting at Summerhill and other state lands
like it in 2001, 2004, 2009 and 
2012. 

Also, last Tuesday (sorry for lateness) in the middle of the day, I heard a
BARRED OWL call twice on the 
south side of the pond at Sapsucker Woods (unless someone was imitating
one).

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys on nest at Hog Hole

11 AM 4/24/12, Two ospreys on nesting platform near Hog Hole. They were there 
for the whole hour of our walk.  One brought some nesting material to the 
platform.

The bird seemed very relaxed and sleepy while we were there (SFO group).  I 
went back after class after grabbing my camera from the car and the bird was 
gone.  When I emailed our local group (Broome County--bluewing) Anne Clark 
emailed me back saying that she'd heard "my" owl repeatedly when she was near 
her crows nests.  Makes a person wish they knew (and saw) more in the lives of 
these creatures!

[cayugabirds-l] ravens & white-throated sparrows

On my way to the bus stop in Eastern Heights this morning I heard the croaking, 
then saw a RAVEN cruising south. A minute later another one came by with 2 
crows in pursuit.

Also, heard WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS everywhere, including seeing 5 right under 
my feeder, which was a first.
