[cayugabirds-l] drive to Montezuma Audobon Center

2013-02-15 Thread cl...@juno.com
Taking child to homeschool class at the MAC today, was a good excuse to do some
birding. Travelled up the east side of Cayuga Lake in the morning, then down
the west side about 3 pm.

Highlights were:
Northern Shrike on 34B just south of Jerry Smith Rd.
4 adult Bald Eagles on north side of Armitage Rd (across from nest)
Van Dyne Spoor Road - 4 immature Bald Eagles, 3 N. Flickers, 2 N. Harriers

Return trip over to Wycoff/Rock River intersection:
no sign of Short-eared Owl in the evergreens (didn't look long, because the dog
was being protective), but the field behind was in process of being filled with
snow geese! Multiple flocks arriving, circling and eventually landing...several
blue phase

[cayugabirds-l] W. King Road, Fri 2/15

2013-02-15 Thread Mark Chao
On Friday morning at about 10:45, I watched a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
at the intersection of West King and Sandbank Roads in south Ithaca. The
hawk hovered and kited in the wind, a few times floating dozens of meters
straight backward as if projected from a rewinding film reel.

Then a Red-tailed Hawk flew in and struck with flashing talons at the
Rough-legged Hawk. The two birds tumbled together a few times, eventually
settling on the ground out of my view for about 20 seconds of suspense.
Finally the hawks separated and rose to rest in some neighboring trees. At
the same time, a bench-clearing brawl broke out, with two American Crows
attacking a second Red-tailed Hawk that had appeared out of nowhere.

Today is the start of the Great Backyard Bird Count, which runs through
Monday. This year, participants can choose to enter GBBC sightings straight
from eBird!

[cayugabirds-l] EASTERN PHOEBE

2013-02-15 Thread Jill Vaughan
About a week and a half ago, during one of several swings I made up Cayuga
Vista Drive looking for the Northern Shrike, I saw a bird in the hedgerow
that dropped down as soon as I got my binoculars up. I had observed a dark
head, light chest. I waited for it to appear again, but it did not. I
returned later in the day but did not see it. Last week, I saw the bird
when I did not have binoculars with me. (What kind of birder am I, huh?)
It was in the same area as it had been. Two days ago, I posted the
Northern Shrike and again saw the mystery bird with the flycatcher head and
coloring of a phoebe. I checked eBird, and decided it was too early for an
appearance in our area. This afternoon, Sue Henne (an experienced birder)
emailed me that she had just seen an EASTERN PHOEBE on Cayuga Vista Drive.
I called her immediately, and she said there was no doubt, since she had
been quite close to the bird, and even observed the tail-flicking. With the
"backup" of her identification, I am now comfortable to report to that a
week and a half ago and again two days ago, I saw an EASTERN PHOEBE on
Cayuga Vista Drive. Sue and I drove there right after we talked, and while
the phoebe made no appearance, two RED-TAILED HAWKS were busy hunting and a
flock of seven AMERICAN ROBINS perched in a tree.

[cayugabirds-l] Crows mobbing Great Horned Owl on nest

2013-02-15 Thread Mona Bearor
Yesterday morning I observed about 50 crows mobbing a Great Horned Owl
on a nest. It made me wonder if the crows could make the owl abandon
the nest with repeated harassment, or if they would just give up after a
while. I had an appointment so I couldn't stick around too long, but
did watch this behavior for over 20 minutes non-stop. The owl was still
on the nest today.

Any thoughts on this?

2013-02-15 Thread Sally Eller
We are about 80% sure it was a Short-eared Owl who flew very close to our
car as we were driving at Rt 96 and CR 129 in Ovid, 40 min ago. Definitely
not a Northern Harrier.
Question --- would this be legitimate to put on my GBBC for today?

[cayugabirds-l] Hawks--McGraw Hall

Today as I sat in the staff lounge in Olin Library, it looked as though 2
Red-tailed Hawks were spending a lot of time separately and together at the
tower on McGraw Hall. Could they be working on a nest? Has anyone else noticed
this activity? I didn't have my binoculars with me.

[cayugabirds-l] Eagle nest -

2013-02-15 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Unlike Osprey that tend to dismiss nest proximity as populations grow, Bald
Eagles
in the east prefer a wide separation from other BAEA nests. It will be
interesting
to watch what happens here as the population of BAEA grows and how much
interspecies
tolerance with OSPR, as Diana mentioned, will be tolerated. Our hope of course
is
that some of the mature birds will start house hunting at the south end of our
lakes. Queen Catharine Marsh would be ideal for them and for observation.

Dave, thanks for the NOSH on No. Shrike.;-)
