[cayugabirds-l] Etna: Ring-necked Pheasant
This morning, we were very surprised to see a female RING-NECKED PHEASANT feeding under our front bushes. She was eating the millet seeds that I had scattered there yesterday morning. I don't think I have ever personally heard or seen Ring-necked Pheasants in the Etna area, but am fairly certain they have been here in the past, just knowing the area. There was also a single PINE SISKIN at our thistle feeders today. Lastly, almost every day, as long as there is suet available, we usually receive 1-2 visits from a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS. Pretty neat to watch at such close range. Good birding! [cayugabirds-l] Fox Sparrow at last.
Finally, my favorite spring arrival, a Fox Sparrow appeared this morning, hop-scratching under our feeders. To hear it sing in our yard would add to the pleasure. A pair of Purple Finches (m,ƒ) has been around for a few days. We also had a few Pine Siskins appear briefly on their way northward. Nari Mistry, Ellis Hollow Rd. Nari B. [cayugabirds-l] killdeer
Running near a playground yesterday out in Danby, we accidentally came too close to an invisible killdeer nest and the parent flushed giving us a momentary glimpse into a small pile of woodchips with a single green-ish colored egg with brown spots. The relatively large size of the egg surprised me compared to the size of the bird. We quickly left the area of course. Dave -- David J. McDermitt -- 1610 Danby Rd. [cayugabirds-l] Winter wren @ Monkey Run South
Our SFO group heard the beautiful song of a winter wren this morning at Monkey Run South (along the muddy SW loop trail). I heard one/it yesterday also, but it was abbreviated and sufficiently off that I wasn't 100% sure that's what I heard. Other notable sightings there include a pair of purple finches (along the rail bed) offering good diagnostic looks, and a red-bellied woodpecker calling from an apparent nest hole (part of a near-sweep of woodpeckers, along with a brilliant male sapsucker, cooperative hairy, flicker calling continuously from an exposed perch). Earlier we checked out the Park Preserve - including the new boardwalk area adjacent to Hammond Hill - though the birding was relatively quiet (possibly correlated to the white stuff that continues to fall from the sky), but we did get scope views of three heron nests at the rookery, good below-eye-level looks at golden-crowned kinglets - including one whose crown was almost orange, and distant drumming of ruffed grouse. Also, on multiple occasions throughout the morning we saw small flying groups of great blue herons - in 4s, 2s, 4s again. At Mt. Pleasant a perched kestrel gave good looks before flying off, in so doing flushing a savannah sparrow from the field up to the same tree. Not much else happened there then. When departing we disturbed 4-5 turkey vultures investigating a freshly road-killed possum; we pulled off to await their return, and for a while two of them worked the carcass for a bit, but not long after we got out of the car they flew off to nearby perches for some good scope views. [cayugabirds-l] Bohemian Waxwings
SFO group 5 had great looks at 3 Bohemian Waxwings at the Edwards Cliff Preserve at the end of Teeter Rd. These particular birds were perched openly just inside the preserve to the south of the open area near the entrance. There was a flock of approximately 75 waxwings while we were in the preserve that we only got a very brief look at before they flew becoming sillouetes against the clouds. The birds I saw clearly before they took off were Cedars, but it wouldn't surprise me if there were Bohemian mixed in. I don't know Bohemian calls at all well, but mixed in with the clearly Cedar calls were calls that sounded different to me. [cayugabirds-l] SFO Sunday April 14th, 2013 Group 8
Saw potential fallout conditions from Ithaca and points north on the radar before sunrise so decided to take SFO group down to the lake instead of the uplands today. We started at Myer's and immediately got on one flock of BONAPARTE'S GULLS migrating north along the lake. Then there was flock after flock of BONAPARTE'S GULLS heading north... at times some would land at the point and at one time we had 4 different birds ranging from full non-breeding, to partially breeding to the complete black headed breeding plumage . In addition, CASPIAN TERNS landed at the point too as well which was awesome. We got excellent views of these beautiful birds. There were also many BUFFLEHEAD, one LONG-TAILED DUCK, 1 RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, COMMON LOON. We also had an OSPREY fly quite low over Myer's. We also saw many TREE and BARN SWALLOWS migrating up the lake. One of the students got on a NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED as well. From Ladoga, best bird was a RED-NECKED GREBE which was distant. We also had awesome views of 2 COMMON LOONS in breeding plumage really close. Eventually we counted at least 7 COMMON LOONs. There were also many HORNED GREBES, we counted 44 . 2 OSPREYS were chasing each other through some trees. From Stewart Park we had lots of variety of waterfowl of which the students did a great job identifying...REDHEAD...LESSER SCAUP...BUFFLEHEAD...RUDDY DUCK... MALLARD...BLACK DUCKCOMMON MERGANSER...RING-NECKED DUCK and COMMON GOLDENEYE. They also got on AMERICAN COOTS...PIED BILLED GREBE...HORNED GREBES and a distant COMMON LOON. We also found the EARED GREBE distant across from the red jetty. The bird appeared to be in non-breeding plumage but lighting was not great so it could have been transitional to an extent. It was not in full breeding that is for sure. I don't believe this was the same bird Carl Steckler photographed. The head was smaller more triangularish than the horned grebes also... grayish cheeks. Shape was distinctly different than the HORNED GREBES. Back at Sapsucker Woods, we started to round the bend past Kip's Barn and we noticed a bunch of sparrows...some with white outer tail feathers and not juncos! VESPER SPARROWS. We counted 2 but apparently there were even more as Jay reported later. We also had SAVANNAH, SONG, and CHIPPING. I believe one of the students had a FIELD SPARROW too but was not seen by all. Then an adult GOLDEN EAGLE flew over toward the airport! This was exciting but it could potentially be a lost bird as per my email below. In all, I think we totaled 67 species or so. Another day of great birds and great people! [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius vesper sparrow
Well, who can keep up with Jay's impressive flock of sparrows. Verper at Goetchius near road at DOT wetlands. Flew west toward gate for deer exclosure. It is feasible that Vesper could nest in this habitat. Jay's are almost certainly all migrants. (In the spirit of very friendly competition, does this make the Goetchius bird better?) Incidentally, this vesper is new to the cummulative Goetchius list as kept by the Finger Lakes Land Trust. One of the great things about birding is that you don't know what new observation may occur anywhere. [cayugabirds-l] Three Osprey at Stewart Park; two Yellow-Rumped warblers; Eared Grebe
Ann Mitchell's post reminded me to write that we saw three adult Osprey at Stewart Park over the Swan Pen pond, at around 1pm. One (female?) perched on a tree and kept calling while the other two circled overhead. Then they all flew off toward Hog Hole. There were also two Yellow-Rumped warblers by the swan pond. One Eared Grebe (basic plumage?) swam within binocular distance of the dock. Lots of Redheads, Scaup, Red-Necked Ducks etc, out further not too clear with just binoculars. Hooded mergansers (2 male with 7 females), Buffleheads, grebes (horned?) in the inlet. Nari Gin Mistry --- Nari B. [cayugabirds-l] Dryden area birds
I decided to hit water and field areas around Dryden this morning. May have missed early morning fallout as 18 DC CORMORANTS were circling away as I arrived. There were 15 HORNED GREBES and 9 PIED BILLEDS were good counts for there. Also 1 COM LOON and 20 or so BUFFLEHEADS. then I had VESPER SPARROWS on W Lake Rd (singing) and Cornell Lane - w lots of SAVANNAH'S. the highlight was the small pond and wetland south of Cornell Lane which was covered w ducks- 80 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 7 WOOD DUCKS, pair each of AM WIGEON and PINTAIL. Also 7 BONAPARTES GULLS with 50+ RING BILL adults. Still a carpet of JUNCOS in my neighborhood.
