[cayugabirds-l] Ravens and Am. Crow

2013-06-08 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Here is what I got of the corvids. Raven call is loudest when he was right over
my head. Don't know if it meant yelling at me for spoiling their dinner.

[cayugabirds-l] Lick St., Summerhill, Clay-colored Sparrow still at the Christmas trees

2013-06-08 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
Hi all,

The Clay-colored Sparrow that Jay and Livia found on Lick Street, in
Summerhill, is still there. I spent a good amount of time birding the area, but
didn't have any luck re-finding it until I was almost back to the car at the
north end of the tree farm. It was singing from the east side of the road a
series of 5-7 buzzy notes. I managed to get a decent view before it flew to the
Christmas trees. It continued to sing the long series of buzzes then recrossed
back to the field side. Jay said it was singing softly when he found it and I
too thought the song was very soft. I don't think it could be heard well more
than 50 feet away, especially with the Blue-winged Warblers buzzing away. All
the other sparrows seem to really belt it out.

I was glad to spend extra time here because it's really quite birdie. I
heard a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, but wasn't able to see him. There were
several Phoebes, a pair of Kingbirds, Blue-winged Warblers, House Wrens, many
Cedar Waxwings, Brown Thrasher, Towhees and gazillions of C. Yellowthroats. The
area is also a Field Sparrow magnet and I was able to see many of them as they
seemed to sing everywhere.

Happy birding,

Gary

[cayugabirds-l] Ravens continue

2013-06-08 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Ravens seem to continue in the yard and neighboring area. A neighboring
squirrel died in a car accident and the ravens are waiting for the meal.
Because the squirrel was in the middle of the road, I moved it into my
neighbors yard, (no one lives there it is some cult group property). I waited
for ravens to return to take some video. But they saw me and refused to be
there anywhere near. I hid behind trees, when American Crows discovered the
squirrel. I did not want the squirrel to be their dinner (sorry Anne) so moved
out of the tree Am. Crows vanished. Before they did so I got a nice recording
of American Crows squabbling as there were no cars for a few seconds. Almost
around that time the raven family circled and one parent flew right over my
head belching out a loud craww that I could record and luckily no cars at that
time.

Right now the ravens flew over to Strawberry circle and that is somewhere they
seem have nested in Northeast direction.

It was great to watch them!

Cheers

Hi all,

I was working in the kitchen when I heard some strange hissing or heavy
breathing like calls. So I thought may be wood-chuck was making this call as
she and her babies were feeding on clover in the backyard. Then the calls got
loud and seem to be coming from the front yard. So I opened the door to see a
young raven was begging from the maple in front of the house. Seeing me he flew
away. But then I heard the second one which was also in the yard on another
tree and was also begging. May be a parent was nearby. I saw one adult flying
across yesterday evening. So it looks like East Hill ravens have successfully
bred or at least have fledglings!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cerulean Warbler? N Park Preserve to Hammond Hill

2013-06-08 Thread Diane Morton
Thank you! Yes, after reviewing more of the songs in the Macaulay library
we agree that it is a Blackburnian warbler. (Suan also suggested
Blackburnian to us).

2013-06-08 Thread Kenneth V. Rosenberg
Hi Diane

The song is a Blackburnian Warbler. It stutters in the middle like a Cerulean
but ends by going very high at the end - almost off the audible scale for most
of us - rather than ending with a loud "zreee" The habitat is right for
Blackburnian up there As well.

[cayugabirds-l] dead yard birds and WNV monitoring

2013-06-08 Thread Anne Clark
Dear Cayuga-listers,

Asking for your help in noting and giving me a call/email on any dead or sick
"yard birds" such as robins, cardinals, catbirds, grackles...or others.

As some of you may remember, last year brought another outbreak of West Nile
virus. This hit the Cayuga Heights area crows particularly hard, but also
registered nationwide as the worst for human cases.

Michigan already has its first WNV case in a bird, a wild turkey. In
collaboration with a colleague in vet pathology/ DEC, we want to determine the
beginning of WNV hitting birds in Tompkins and surrounding counties. In the
last 3 days, I have had a series of calls about dead birds in Binghamton. As
far as I can tell, they included an older fledgling robin, fledgling grackles,
another "sick" robin, and two independent cases ofl "blue birds", probably
bluejays. The robin I picked up was a fairly advanced fledgling, but too far
gone to test.

In summary, I would appreciate any word of unusual finds of dead or sick birds,
especially in residential areas.

Thanks, Anne

[cayugabirds-l] Cerulean Warbler? N Park Preserve to Hammond Hill

2013-06-08 Thread Diane Morton
Today Ken and I went to the North parking area for the Roy Park Preserve
for the first time. We walked the trail from there up into Hammond Hill
State Forest. Most of the birds were pretty quiet in the light rain. About
20 minutes up from where the trail enters the woods, though, there was a
warbler singing from the tree tops that we were not familiar with (this was
at about 9 AM). We never did see it, but Ken recorded it with his iphone
so that we might identify it when we got home. Now that we are home and
comparing this to other warbler songs, to us, it sounds like a Cerulean
Warbler.

Have others heard/seen Ceruleans there?

Here is a link to the recording--sorry that the quality is poor and very
faint. Can someone either confirm this as Cerulean, or let us know if it
is something else?

Thanks,
Diane Morton & Ken Kemphues

Sharing sounds is new to us-- not sure how to prevent the site from playing
the Sapsucker Woods Barred Owl recording just after the faint warbler. So
ignore that part!
