Re: [cayugabirds-l] Basin list dilemma

Well given that every pheasant in the basin probably originated in a pen, I
don't see why we wouldn't count one that was flying back in.

[cayugabirds-l] Mud Lock Canvasbacks, GBH, etc

2014-01-08 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
This afternoon just south of Mud Lock, along with many Canadas, tundra swans &
other ducks, I saw 2 Canvasbacks. Without scope I wasn't sure about 3 swans
which may have been trumpeters.

North of the lock on the river were several common mergs, lots of Canadas & on
the shore ice were 2 great blue herons.

Also saw an immature bald eagle & 3 unidentified hawks. Too much sun in the
eyes & traffic on 90 to get good looks.

Mill pond water level again is high enough that water is in the metal duck box,
something I've seen only twice in the 23+ yrs. here. Along with Canadas were
gadwall, wigeons, one redhead, mallards & buffles. Factory St. pond has had the
same variety so I suppose the birds fly from one pond to the other, esp. with
all the shooting. NO screechie, tho' ... (:>(
Glad that Mark Chao still has his beautiful tenant.

Our semi-resident sharpie has been patrolling our feeders & has gotten a couple
mourning doves & other smaller birds. Our 4 resident crows have been
unperturbed by the hawks, including a red-tail sitting next to them in the
English walnut tree.

[cayugabirds-l] Fw: [Cny-naturalhistory] Snow Owl, Tamarack Lane , Homer-comparison to McCloy Road snowy photos

2014-01-08 Thread Judy Read
For those people keeping track of the snowy owls:
The snowy owl I saw today on Tamarack Lane outside of Homer is not the same
snowy owl I saw Dec 31st on McCloy Road, Homer even though it is only a few
miles away as the owl flies.

Comparing photos and binocular views of both birds, the bird on Tamarack Lane
has more white on its head, and the body on the bird on McCloy Road was more
heavily barred.

I watched the snowy owl on Tamarack Lane in Homer from 4:15 to 4:45 today. My
fingers got too cold to stay any longer.
The owl seemed to favor the roofline of the 2nd house on the right, or one of
the poles that is near route 90.
Other people have seen it in the field.

Tamarack Lane location:

NOTE: Tamarack Lane is NOT on Google maps street view. It is a new housing
development with about 5 houses.
The houses can be seen on the satellite view but the road is still not labeled.

Using the satellite view:

route 90 west out of Homer
you will pass Cosmos Hill Road and Sweeney Road on your left.
Tamarack Lane is BEFORE Foster Road on the right. (both Tamarack and Foster
come in on the right)

On Google maps satellite view it makes it appear that you could take Creal Hill
Road to get there. Don't believe it!

A woman is going to post photos on the Homer newsletter website. (I have no
information about that)

Enjoy this winter. This was snowy owl #12 for me (with very little effort).

2014-01-08 Thread Mark Chao
The EASTERN SCREECH-OWL didn't appear last Thursday and Friday during and
after the heavy snowfall, but otherwise we've seen it every day so far in
2014. Yesterday, when the temperature was about zero degrees Fahrenheit,
the owl exited the box at about 5:20 PM. Through our closed double-pane
window, Miyoko and I heard the owl trilling repeatedly at 11:30 PM. And
late this morning, it basked in the sunshine and 14-degree chill -- a
perfect hemispheroid of feathers and trapped heat.

I've posted a few new photos at

Hi all,
I would venture to guess that the Snowy Owl Marie reported yesterday was the
one that both Carl Steckler and I, separately found Sat then Sun near
Venice-Genoa Town Line Rd. and not the one that was seen by many at Poplar
Ridge Rd.

I found two Snowy Owls Sunday - first the one many saw near Poplar Ridge Rd.
(there was a regular "bird jam" at that location), then the one I also reported
Sunday, near the V-G town line rd and Rt. 90, off Indian Field Rd.

That location is a lot nearer to Ledyard Rd. where Marie saw a Snowy, than is
Pop. Rdg Rd.
and since these owls seem to stay in one general location for awhile, maybe the
one Marie saw was this second "townline" snowy owl.

perhaps Poplar Ridge S. Owl is still there someplace in that vicinity, too.

HI all,

Reasoning that my car would be warmer than my house, I headed out for a drive
this afternoon to search for owls.

On Indian Field Rd (north of Genoa) I found a Snowy Owl somewhat far out in a
field (well out of photo range)…it was a lot easier to spot than if there had
been snow on the ground! It was on the west side of Indian Field Rd, 0.6 miles
south of the intersection with Ledyard Rd. This is farther south than where
folks found a Snowy Owl over the weekend, but it was likely the same
individual, because I saw no owls at/near the intersection of Indian Field and
Poplar Ridge.

At 3:30 or so I headed over to the Long Point Winery to wait for the
Short-eared Owl show to begin. Until they appeared I was entertained by a
handsome male Northern Harrier, which flew low and slow, hampered by the wind,
over the vegetation and provided lots of fun photo ops. Then around 4:30, 4
(possibly more) Short-eared Owls took to the sky, foraged around the field for
a while then headed farther away as the light dropped. Photographing from the
car, I kept the heater going, only turning off the engine as the birds drew
near, to avoid vibrations and fuzzy shots. Cold but fun.

[cayugabirds-l] SNOWY OWL carcass

2014-01-08 Thread Michele Mannella
Sorry, I hit enter before I was done writing.

Yesterday morning, I decided to take a detour from my regular route to
work, and I turned down Halseyville Road hoping to spot the Enfield SNOWY
OWL that was recently reported. Just as I approached Iradell Road, I found
a snowy owl lying in the middle of the road, an apparent victim of a
collision.

Without examining it too closely, I placed the lifeless owl in my back seat
and headed for the Lab of O, where a staff member guided me in. There
little visible injury to the bird, and we got close looks at its huge feet
and beautiful plumage.

I send my gratitude to the staff at the lab who were so kind with me, for
their reverence with the bird, and to the owl itself for its long journey
south and stunning beauty. I hope the owl will have a permanent place at
the lab, and provide good science education for years to come.
