Martha Fischer and I participated in the DEC waterfowl survey this morning
on the west side of Cayuga Lake from Taughannock Point up almost to Deans
Cove. We didn't find anything particularly noteworthy, but diversity wasn't
bad, and there were definitely more birds around (in that section anyway)
I agree with Dave Nutter. I saw the petition. Wouldn't sign it. EVER.
Remember that snow geese were more or less protected for yrs.. They are far
more wary than Canadas so the extra hunting season for them doesn't do much to

From north of Treman Marina the immature Glaucous Gull was still visible on the ice east of the white lighthouse until 5:27pm when it flew north along with other gulls. It's on my Luddite List, along with the adult Iceland Gull which I saw fly past East Shore Park this morning. My legs are tired af
In addition, there was an adult Iceland Gull quite close the Glaucous Gull. The
wingtips appeared entirely white, although it was observed from a considerable

1. It has been pointed out to me that Chris Wood should currently possess the cup since he won it in 2012 and Jay McGowan has yet to be awarded it for 2013. They have been the top rivals for awhile.2. I am not the administrator of the wiki site, but I have done a lot of editing when it looked like
One correction is that Chris Wood won
the 2012 cup so he likely has "The Cup" until it is awarded to the 2013 winner.
I believe some of the registration rules have been relaxed a bit in recent to
encourage more participation but I could be wrong.

No, the details of the David Cup are not supposed to be secret. Sorry to be so long to reply. The David Cup is named after Karl David, who I believe was a math professor at Wells College, as well as a birding fanatic. The McIlroy Cup is named after Dorothy McIlroy, a great local birder who was a p

Hi Richard and all,
Here are some of the answers.
The Cup was started by group of birders, I think main members were Jeff and
Allison Wells, Steve Kelling, and Tom Nix and of course Karl David was also
there. I remember Steve Kelling was the one who asked me to join "the Cuppers"

I had a distant view of what is likely a Northern Shrike at Cayuga Vista Dr

When I pulled up, the candidate was on one of the low trees near the road, but
flew down and into the hedge just as I brought my binocs up so I got nothing

I am at the Front Desk of the Visitor's Center of the Lab today, and got a
call from a Kendall resident, saying she saw a Snowy Owl yesterday while
eating lunch at Kendall (so in the field-like area visible from the
cafeteria area).
Not confirmed, but thought I should share.

So the plan is to eradicate the Mute Swan in NY? I know it is invasive, but
that seems a bit harsh. I just got this petition against this plan, in case
