[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock on Sapsucker Woods Rd

Today at 3:00 PM I flushed a woodcock from the ditch along Sapsucker Woods
Rd, across from where Sanctuary Dr intersects.  It flew only about 30 feet
from the road before landing on the forest floor.

[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Lake Lesser Black-backed Gull,Finger lakes airport Snowy owl,Snow Geese everywhere

   An afternoon ride to the north end of Seneca and Cayuga Lakes produced a
beautiful breeding plumage Lesser black-backed Gull at Seneca Lake Park
along with a first year Iceland Gull. A Snowy Owl was along Martin Road in
Seneca Falls on the east side of the Finger Lakes airport. Cayuga Lake was
still mostly frozen off of Cayuga Lake Sate Park but everything north of
there was full of Redhead and other expected ducks. One dark morph
Rough-legged hawk was along route 318 at Black Brook Road. 

   The phenomenon of the afternoon was the huge numbers of Snow Geese
everywhere from Macedon to Seneca Falls most between route 21 to the west
and 89 to the east; both north and south of the thruway in many corn fields.
Several fields had flocks of at least 5000 and at least one had an estimated
1. Along the thruway whenever the sun came out large flocks could be
seen against the gray background moving to the west.  Another huge flock was
along Canandaigua Road north of Macedon Center and another at Yellow-mills

[cayugabirds-l] Song Sparrows displaying

This evening I noticed two SONG SPARROWS in our mock orange.  One began 
the wing-fluttering display to the other, and the other promptly 
responded with its own version of wing fluttering.  Time to think about 
nesting!  Come on Spring!!!

[cayugabirds-l] Purple Finch; 4 Fox Sparrows; Snow Buntings & H.Larks

Just before noon today, a lone female Purple Finch showed up at our 
feeders among the many House Finch  pairs. No male as yet.
At Monkey Run South Gin & I met Chris Wood who told us about a Fox 
Sparrow on the railroad bed above his house, so we walked there and 
found four bright Fox Sparrows foraging in the open on the railroad bed 
about a half-mile from Monkey Run Rd.
Then up on Mt. Pleasant Rd at the East end, I came upon a nice flock of 
about 40 Snow Buntings feeding on the road, a few males in sharp-looking 
breeding plumage; also among them were several Horned Larks. More 
H.Larks were creeping about among the corn-stalks. No Longspurs visible.
Back home, with the snow flurries swirling around the feeders, there are 
four Red-wing Blackbirds and two Common Grackles, along with Song 
Sparrows, 3 Tree Sparrows and all the other regulars.

[cayugabirds-l] Eurasian Widgeon - Lake Rd, Cayuga, NY

Just found a Eurasian Widgeon in with Redheads and American Widgeon while 
scoping off Lake Road, at the start of the Cayuga trail, just south of the Town 
park. Working the edge of the ice. I watched it for about five minutes before 
it flew about 50 feet north up the lake edge. Photos.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Great Blue Herons

Hi all,

   I don't think that it was just local Great Blue Herons that were moving 
around the Basin yesterday.  In addition to seeing one heron hanging around 
Myers point on Saturday morning, for the second week in a row, I also saw three 
high-flying herons together heading northeast over the Farmers' Market area 
yesterday morning that looked like they had no intention of stopping off in the 
area.  These three birds were making very impressive time, taking advantage of 
yesterday's strong, favourable tailwinds.

While traversing Upper Buttermilk Park (muddy, icy), I was surprised to find 2 
GREAT BLUE HERON flying about the Lake Treman area together.  
There is some open water there, and 11 Canada Geese were also present.  
I assume the two birds were a pair that was checking out this area as a 
possible nest site.

I just pulled into the finger lakes outlet mall. 1000+?? Snow geese flying over 
I 90 heading northwest. Absolutely beautiful and it never ceases to amaze me to 
see these birds in large numbers.
