Re: [cayugabirds-l] tree swallows
This evening about 5:45pm I saw an estimated 150 scattered TREE SWALLOWS southbound over Cayuga Inlet near Floral Avenue. They quit passing by before the north wind kicked in, but that may have been due to time of day. I don't know why they were headed south. --Dave Nutter On Apr 06, 2015, at 03:55 PM, Susan Fast wrote: > Late this morning atop Mt. [cayugabirds-l] young Tundra Swan-Herman Rd nr Dryden
One young Tundra Swan walking and paddling among assorted Canada geese, Mallards and Herring Gulls, at 7pm this evening, on the receding overflow of Fall Creek along Herman Rd, just S of 38, E side of the road. It was the only swan there. I am assuming no one has a pet or hand reared one nearby. It was nicely white on the back but still cloudy, patchy grey up the neck and head. No sign of yellow near the eye and a very faint pinkish hue still, centrally on the upper bill. There have been a lot of waterfowl on the flooded creek near Freeville, including a Redhead on Saturday Apr 4. For a variety of reasons, I don't have an accurate list of other species on that day. [cayugabirds-l] Migrants in my yard
New in my 'yard' this morning were more singing Fox Sparrows, a lone Chipping Sparrow, several Golden-crowned Kinglets, and one or two singing Purple Finches. Turkeys are gobbling, Ruffed Grouse are drumming, and I'll be on the watch for returning Hermit Thrushes. -Geo Kloppel, West Danby -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] early Lincoln's Sparrow
This afternoon I noticed a possible Lincoln's Sparrow on our tray feeder. I got a good look before it was spooked by Gin walking in the yard. In a little while it appeared again with an Am Tree Sparrow, on the tray feeder. I was able to get another good look but it was quite skittish and flew off again when juncos landed on the feeder. I realize this is early for the average arrival date (I looked it up, it's May 3), but I am reasonably sure of the identification. I will report if it comes again. [cayugabirds-l] tree swallows
Late this morning atop Mt. Pleasant, I watched a pair of TREE SWALLOWS, at one of the nest boxes along the road to the towers, starting territory and courtship behaviors. The female (presumably) hung on the front, looking in the hole, while the male (presumably) did "flutter flight" over her and sang the tree swallow song. Then both would fly rapidly about the box, describing mostly eccentric circles. Sometimes one or the other would fly very high in the air doing smaller circles. [cayugabirds-l] Jetty Woods this morning
The Red-throated Loon was still present this morning (about 9am) just west of the white lighthouse. As I scoped towards the east I saw in the far distance just north of Stewart Park a bird that I believe was a Tree Swallow. I couldn't swear by it, and I lost it after about five seconds due to the great distance. Are they back? I had some other FOYs for me: Great-blue Heron, Pied-billed Grebe (about 4), two Double-crested Cormorants. -Paul -- Paul Anderson, VP of Engineering, GrammaTech, Inc. 531 Esty St., Ithaca, NY 14850 Tel: +1 607 273-7340 x118; http://www.grammatech.com -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Merlin - Dryden Rite Aid - GHOW & RTLoon continue
On consecutive 15 min. visits to the parking lot at Rite Aid in Dryden: two Merlin flying into spruce trees just to the east of Rite Aid at ~ 4:00 PM Sunday, and on Monday ~7:`15 one flying from trees to the south. ~7:15 AM. More info appreciated. Great Horned Owl actually winked as class watched at golf course (Thanks to whomever for the posting - I've forgotten name). RT Loon ridiculously close at marina on Sunday sfternoon: best views of my life, and an incredible treat for a class. (Again thanks for post). Sunday morning; About 6-7 meadowlark on Burdick Hill Rd. [cayugabirds-l] Bonaparte's Gulls,Merlin
There were two Bonaparte’s Gulls on a mini-ice berg off the west end of Stewart Park around 8:30 this morning. As I was watching, they were forced off by a Herring Gull and flew to the north. While walking down Tioga Street (X corner of Courth St) around 10:00 I heard the calls of a Merlin. The bird was in the air, circling. And our Phoebe has finally returned - singing right now outside my window. Re:[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike and Vesper Sparrow
At least three more VESPER SPARROWS, including one in full song, were along Burdick Hill Road in Lansing this morning. The GLAUCOUS GULL and TUFTED DUCK continue off Stewart Park, as well as a Double-crested Cormorant and the usual waterfowl. The back of the pond at Sapsucker Woods has several RING-NECKED DUCKS, as well as Wood Ducks, Mallards, and Hooded Mergansers. [cayugabirds-l] calm Cayuga Lake Sunday
Yesterday morning Ann Mitchell & I took advantage of near-perfect viewing conditions on Cayuga Lake: There was no wind, and the air temperature matched the water temperature. We sought the elusive Eared Grebe and re recalcitrant Ross's Goose. Both quests were a bust, even though at Long Point we saw 40 COMMON LOONS and a dozen HORNED GREBES, and from the Wells College boathouse I counted 59 Horned Grebes in all kinds of cute and crazy plumages. There were a relatively few hundreds of SNOW GEESE on the mucklands on NYS-31 between NYS-89 and the Village of Montezuma along with a some TUNDRA SWANS and various dabblers. Our consolation prizes included hearing a SAVANNAH SPARROW and seeing an EASTERN MEADOWLARK along the Lake Road fields below the Long Point Winery, me finding a EURASIAN WIGEON through a random gap between houses along NYS-90 north of the Village of Cayuga, and us getting excellent close looks at BLUE=WINGED TEAL in the weeds at the south end of the Visitor Center pond at Montezuma NWR, plus all the usual Anas & Aythya ducks, as well and lots of other stuff. --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
