[cayugabirds-l] greater white-fronted geese lower lake rd. Cayuga Lake SP

2016-02-11 Thread Joshua Snodgrass
At least two, possibly 5 Greater White-fronted Geese seen this evening
around sunset on Lower Lake Rd. just south of Cayuga Lake State Park on the
west side of Cayuga Lake. Life bird for me! Other highlights include
1 Mute Swan
many Tundra swans
3 Gadwall beautiful silvery males
2 Northern Pintail beautiful male with female
2 immature Bald Eagles that spooked the huge flock of gulls, who then
floated around swirling in the dying light.

here's the ebird checklist with terrible documenting photos of the Greater
White-fronted geese. Please correct me if I've misidentified them

[cayugabirds-l] OOB Owasco Bald Eagle hunting

2016-02-11 Thread Eben McLane
There is a broad, shallow cove on Owasco Lake’s west side (Rte. 38) south of
Auburn, a bit north of Stone School Road, formed by Buck Point and curvature of
the shore to the south. Adult Bald Eagles (I also saw a first-year bird a few
weeks ago) tend to watch the lake waters from tall trees along Buck Point, and
they fish actively as long as the lake is clear of ice. Today, I stopped my car
and pulled over to the very narrow shoulder to watch an adult eagle swooping,
diving, kiting — pretty much the whole display of having found something it
wanted badly in the water. I saw nothing on the water, just a bit of submarine
commotion and thought: a fish. I noticed several gulls trying timidly to harass
the eagle, but the big bird was very focussed. After swooping and kiting for a
while, the eagle settled into the water and stayed there, almost like a goose;
after a minute or so, it lifted off with a dead or dying Ring-billed Gull gull
in its grip and flew to one of the Buck Point trees to feast.

I think I must have missed the early part of the story, where the eagle attacks
and hurts the gull in the air, and the gull drops into the lake. The whole
drama would have been interesting to witness.

[cayugabirds-l] Redwings

2016-02-11 Thread Peter
Hey fellow birders, I saw a flock of red wing blackbirds (15-20 birds)
yesterday at the MAC center in Savannah, NY while doing our weekly
raptor survey for the refuge. Oddly enough, they were all male with the
exception of one female.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Merlin downtown

2016-02-11 Thread Dave Nutter
Yesterday morning (10 Feb) while waiting by the front door of the Super 8 Motel
(close to the Meadow Court Inn) I saw a female MERLIN approach from the
northeast, alight atop a tall tree along Six-mile Creek, look around a couple
minutes, bob her head as if judging the distance to prey, and fly north and
down out of sight. It was my first Merlin encounter in Ithaca this year. She
could be associated with the male John saw just upstream today.

[cayugabirds-l] Merlin downtown

2016-02-11 Thread John Confer
I drove around South Titus near the Meadow Court Motel for 10-15 minutes
yesterday. The White Pine and Eastern Hemlock that are close to each other and
just northeast of the motel had a Fish Crow nest last year. I was hoping to see
Merlin activity as an indication of potential nesting. AND THERE IT WAS!! A
male Merlin flew around Inlet Creek in the vicinity of the tall pines. This is
very near a Merlin nest from last year. Merlin courtship starts in early April
and I am hoping to monitor nesting success again this year. An optomistic
beginning.

[cayugabirds-l] White-crowned sparrow--Hile School Rd feeders

2016-02-11 Thread AB Clark
>From just outside the Basin:

Feb 11 2016. For the second time since yesterday am, a White-crowned Sparrow
was investigating and feeding a little at my feeder on Hile School Road, ~0.2
mi W of Ed Hill Road. As yesterday, it didn’t stay long. Today, I have watched
off and on all day, and it first turned up at about 5pm.

I have some poor pics in dim light through the window, but I see nothing to
indicate that it is other than an Eastern form. Pink bill vs Pink-orange
bill?? Mainly it looked cold, with its head feathers fluffed like a “fur hat”.
 But maybe I am projecting.
