[cayugabirds-l] South winds tomorrow

2016-04-20 Thread Laura Stenzler
FYI, David Wheeler wrote the following on the Derby Hill hawk watch website
today (http://www.hawkcount.org/month_summary.php?rsite=358) regarding
tomorrow's (April 21) weather and hawk migration.

Next Day Forecast THU: Man your stations This is not a drill.
Best-of-season flight is possible. SE wind drifting to SW, sunny with
increasing clouds and rain approaching but should not be a factor for us beyond
pushing birds ahead of it. Could easily be 3000+ raptors. Main question will be
whether Lake breeze will take over and if it does what that will mean.
Increasing clouds could help in this respect. Big songbird flight possible in
the morning. FRI: something of a question mark depending on how much rain.
Overcast. Rain-free and cold front coming could mean a good flight depending on
exactly what happens. SAT: cold, sunny, NW wind. Not a good forecast. Sunday is
better. Rumor has it blocking high pressure may control North America next
week. That could cost us a lot of birds.

[cayugabirds-l] Black-crowned Night-Heron, Renwick

2016-04-20 Thread Jay McGowan
An adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON found this afternoon by Ethan Chaffee is
still perched up high in Renwick Woods just inland (east) from the trail
along the inlet just as you reach the lagoon.

[cayugabirds-l] osprey nest on Warren Rd.

2016-04-20 Thread howard london
The nest (new?) is atop a utility pole just past the Sheriff's Dept. on the
northbound side of Warren Rd. and opposite Borg-Warner. Passing by there
this afternoon I glimpsed just a bird's head.

[cayugabirds-l] Mating turkey vultures

2016-04-20 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
This morning atop a tall chimney on the Union Springs Academy campus, I
observed a pair of copulating turkey vultures.

This is late but last Wed. a.m., (13th) a golden eagle came flying
right over our house. Had very good binocular views of all sides of the
bird with the sun showing highlights.

Yesterday afternoon, Becky & I went out checking osprey nests around
MNWR areas. We found 2 new nests on back roads between Port Byron &
Montezuma. As light began to fade she saw a new nest on a high tension
power pole NE of Rte. 5 & 20 near Rte. 90. We stopped. Saw another nest.
Thinking about roads in the areas to the north we went searching for the
side road that would get us closer to the power poles. We hit paydirt.
Found another nest. Went then to the next side road & parked under the
power lines focusing on poles to the east & saw 3 nests in a row. As I
looked up to the west, right beside me next to the road was a pole with
a nest on it.

Becky keeps a list of all the nests we have found & whether they are
occupied. Two yrs. ago when I decided to count nests between Union
Springs & the refuge that I knew about I had only 17 nests. A few days
later Becky & I found 6 more. Since then, with Candace Cornell eagerly
on the trail we now have over 80 known nests!!! Not all are occupied,
perhaps for various reasons such as birds may not have survived
migration, but their nos. are climbing.

[cayugabirds-l] Beech Hill Brook

2016-04-20 Thread Geo Kloppel
Nice chorus of Hermit Thrushes this morning along Beech Hill Brook in the L-P
Preserve. Ruby-crowned Kinglets singing in all directions. Fox Sparrows are at
or perhaps past their peak now. One singing Winter Wren. No Louisiana
Waterthrushes yet. That's got me wondering: like many other streams in the
south of Newfield and Danby, the brook received a tremendous scouring last year
during the big flash flood. The bedrock sections of the stream bed are little
changed, but portions over loose aggregate were treated to major rearrangement.
Great quantities of rocks and boulders, some weighing more than 1,000 pounds,
were transported far downstream, all during a few hours in mid-June. LA
Waterthrush habitat took a severe scrubbing, and it seems likely that nests in
the banks could have been destroyed. So, will the Waterthrushes come back this
year? Can't wait to find out!
