I could not guess the number of geese out today off of Cayuga State Park,
as the gigantic rafts spread as far as I could see up and down the lake.
When I reported "tens of thousands" of geese, I would have said a million,
but for fear of exaggeration. Their collective noise at rest is impressive.
Wasn’t that amazing??? We observed that extended flock - and another one
farther south, opposite Aurora - this afternoon. We gave up trying to count
(and looking for Ross’s Goose) and made a “questimate” of at least ONE MILLION.
I wonder if anyone actually has a count?

I saw thousands of, if not tens of thousands of, snow geese at 330 pm today
off Cayuga State Park on the northwest side of the lake. A dozen or so
swans (sp?), swimming on the periphery of the rafts looked like they were
herding the geese. The gang was wonderfully loud.

This afternoon I birded up the east side of Cayuga Lake to Montezuma NWR
visitor center.
At Union Springs north of Village Hall I found the Eurasian Widgeon at lake
edge (thank you Diane Morton!) along with lots of other elegant ducks,
including American Widgeon Northern Pintail, Goldeneye, Buff
pake-breasted = pale-breasted!

I headed up to Aurora this morning early hoping to find photographable
Red-breasted Mergansers near the boathouse.
En route, just south of the ex-Triangle Diner (about 7:30 am), I passed a
pake-breasted raptor in a tree, too big for a kestrel, too small for a buteo,
so I back up and identified a
Jeff's Northern Shrike was still in at Landon Road around 4:00pm when I watched
it for 20 minutes or so. Far off the road in a shrubby field just SE of the
Landon/Slaterville Road junction. Too far for photos, but a cool bird to watch
nonetheless! And the lone Snow Bunting was foraging along the
One of the most cooperative Shrikes I've seen in the county. I initially
saw it at noon in an unsuccessful pursuit of a single Snow Bunting and both
remained visible from Landon Rd for most of the 20 minutes I was there.
