At least one merlin has been very active in the Village of Freeville. It
has been keeping me company as I garden in the yard, but I am assuming it

[cayugabirds-l] Kestrels, meadowlarks

This afternoon I saw three kestrels at three different places!
-Lake rd south of king ferry winery (male).
-Dixon Rd SE of Aurora (male)
-Rt 34b by Fessenden farm, King Ferry. Light wrong to see sex.

saw a singing Meadowlark south of King ferry winery near red barn & near 
kestrel there.

And I am pretty sure I had 3 Meadowlarks on Lake Rd Aurora, near Longpoint 
Winery & down hill from there. Saw 2, heard them sing;
heard third sing down hill from others!

I found a lot of Bonapartes Gulls north of Long Pt. St pk, but by then lake was 
choppy & light was glaring, so could not find Little Gull.

Got good views of nesting Bald Eagles at X of NY Rt 90 & Poplar Ridge Rd. 
Aurora.

Killdeer & 5+ wild turkeys on Algerine rd on way home.
A nice jaunt on Sunday afternoon.

[cayugabirds-l] Up the Lake Today.

Ken, Diane, and I drove up the lake today in search of migrants. I am sorry 
that we were not able to invite others as it would have meant a long string of 
cars. It was a great day to be out, and there were lots of parties along the 
Wildlife Drive. 

Diane has already posted the major find of the day - a Little Gull foraging 
serenely just offshore south of the Aurora Bluffs. It was a perfect 
waterfowl-viewing day: no wind, no shimmer. The LIGU was in a flock of up to 
100 Bonaparte’s Gulls and gave great looks for the 45 minutes that we were 
there. We first noticed it because it was strikingly smaller than the 
surrounding BOGUs, and the tips of the folded primaries were white. At one 
point it took flight, displaying the dark undersides and rounded tips of the 
wings. 

Other birds of note were: two distant Red-necked Grebes off Myers Park, a pair 
of FOY Blue-winged Teal on the Wildlife Drive, Sandhill Cranes at 
Knox-Marcellus and Marten’s Tract, a Virginia Rail kick-kidicking at Marten’s, 
Greater Yellowlegs and a single Dunlin at Carncross Rd, and Ospreys everywhere 
(it seemed).

I really, really regret having to cancel the CBC field trips for this spring - 
and hope that everyone will make an effort to get out birding and report their 
experiences here.

While inside of my Fayetteville home, next to Green Lakes State Park. Could it

the proportions seem different, and the bill is very yellow. I'm inclined to 
think it's a small domestic Mallard, maybe a call duck.

[cayugabirds-l] Albino Green-winged Teal

The small white duck seen on the West edge of Knox Marcellus looks more like a 
albino this morning. Still low light and distant but it appears pure white and 
to have a pink bill.
