Just in case anyone were interested in visiting the area to look for the Black Vultures: the farm stand (Fall Creek Farm Market) is only closed for the winter, the owners live nearby, and they have posted their property and confirmed in person that they don't appreciate trespassers, even for such seemingly harmless pursuits as cross-country skiing across fallow winter fields (which is, of course, completely within their rights). However, the barn is very near the road and easily visible from it. - Allison Myers =Subject: Re: Black vulturesFrom: Dave Nutter Date: Wed, 6 Mar 2024 09:53:24 -0500X-Message-Number: 3 The barn is between Freeville & McLean, more specifically along the SE side of Fall Creek Rd between Red Mill Rd & Malloryville Rd. Google maps shows a building complex associated with a closed farm stand. Below is the eBird rare bird report which I saved. The record doesn’t show up in the eBird database if you search Black Vulture, but I am still able to access it from this link, so it hasn’t been deleted, revised, or hidden, I guess just not confirmed. >> Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) (2)> - Reported Feb 16, 2024 11:34 by Paul >> Rodewald> - 340–350 Fall Creek Rd, Freeville US-NY (42.5289,-76.3158), >> Tompkins, New York> - Map: >> http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=42.528927,-76.315839&ll=42.528927,-76.315839> >> - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S162563609> - Comments: "Two BLVUs >> flying from barn at this location. Re:[cayugabirds-l] cayugabirds-l digest: December 13, 2021
Thank you to everyone who has participated in this discussion thus far! We've had an on-demand water heater for twenty years, solar farm panels for five, and an air-source heat pump ductless mini-split system (from Halco via HeatSmart Tompkins) for one, but although that latter upgrade allowed us to eliminate one of our two propane tanks, we do still need that remaining one until we manage to replace the last couple of gas appliances, and we haven't yet been able to switch to hybrid or electric vehicles . . . all of which to say that I'm grateful for the constructive ideas and will be looking into the heretofore-unknown-to-me Finger Lakes Climate Fund as at least a stopgap offset while we work on further reduction. We've contacted the owner of Halco Energy and asked that he check in with you. All - I'm not sure what the original discussion was about, but if you were talking about taking responsibility for your carbon emissions related to your birding activities, I hope you will consider a direct action of offsetting your travel emissions with your local carbon offset fund - Finger Lakes Climate Fund <http://fingerlakesclimatefund.org> - where you will see your offset dollars put to work helping lower-income households pay for energy efficiency and renewable energy systems that will reduce their emissions and offset yours. We'd love to feature the support of the local birding community in one of our Carbon Race Teams <https://www.fingerlakesclimatefund.org/pages/carbon-races> where you could band together and see yourselves making a difference as a group of climate aware bird protectors. [cayugabirds-l] Snowy owl near Treman Marina
My brother, who works at Treman Marina at the southwest corner of Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, reports a sighting of a Snowy Owl along the lakeshore this morning. The owl may or may not be easily visible from the marina, as he says he only saw her/him after walking west along the lake shore (where the low water level has exposed some of the lake bottom) "until the large roadside ditch joins the lake," near the first house on Route 89. He was able to get a decent cell-phone photo of the owl in flight, and another -- from a distance, but still recognizable -- of her/him sitting on the shore. -Allison Myers -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Bald eagle in Newfield
My second incidental Bald Eagle sighting this spring! This one (another adult) flew over Route 13 at the top of the hill in Newfield (between the old gas station and the turnoff into the Village), headed uphill (west) from the valley below (east of) the road. S/he was carrying something bloody in her/his talons and was being chased by a couple of crows. [cayugabirds-l] Wild turkeys on Mott Road, Dryden
At around 8:00 this morning (Friday), there was a flock of about 50 wild turkeys in the fields behind 184 Mott Road, including probably half a dozen males. Three of them, separated from the main flock and closer to the road, were parading in full tails-spread glory before the same single female. She seemed unimpressed, but I pulled over and took a moment to admire them :-) Cheers,Allison MyersFreeville NY -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
