[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawks

2018-08-24 Thread Ann Mitchell
I missed Jeremey’s alert about the Nighthawks for about an hour, so I went to
Stewart Park. After about an hour I saw one, possibly two, flying around and
calling.

Good Birding, Ann

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip

2018-09-06 Thread Ann Mitchell
I will be leading an all day trip up the lake as far as Savannah on Sunday,
meeting at the parking lot at the Lab of O at 7:30 am. We will be back by 4:00.
Everyone’s invited. We will be mainly looking for waterfowl, shorebirds, and
whatever else is around. If you have a scope, please bring it. It looks like we
will be running into rain, so dress appropriately. Bring a drink and snacks. We
will be stopping for a break and food. You can reach me at
annmitchel...@gmail.com with questions. See you Sunday!

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma

2018-10-14 Thread Ann Mitchell
I stopped by the Montezuma Wildlife Drive around 4:00 today. The Visitor Center
was the only place there were shorebirds which included Lesser Yellowlegs, many
Killdeer, 2 Dunlin, and 3 Black-bellied Plovers. There was one Snow Goose
there. On the back side of the drive just before the Eagle Statue, there were 6
Great Egrets. There were lots of ducks on the main pool which I didn’t go
through.

[cayugabirds-l] Shorebirds in Montezuma

2019-08-09 Thread Ann Mitchell
The Wildlife Drive, between 3:00-4:30. was grass. Eaton Marsh was dry. The
corner past Eaton Marsh had both Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers plus 10+ Great
Egrets. Benning Marsh at the beginning had water but no shorebirds when I was
there.

East Road was the most promising shorebird area. There were quite a few peeps
and Yellowlegs. Everything was very distant and it was hard to distinguish the
shorebird species. There were many Mallards, Wood Ducks, and some other Duck
species. 80+ Great Egrets, Tundra Swans, and 13 Sandhill Cranes, plus Common
Gallinules, Coots, and Great Blue Herons were present.

Good birding,
Ann Mitchell

[cayugabirds-l] Local Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip on 4/12/15

2015-04-12 Thread Ann Mitchell
Gary Kohlenberg and I led a group of nine enthusiastic birders to some
popular birding spots. We first went to Monkey Run South. Highlights were
an Eastern Phoebe, three Wood Ducks flyingin circles trying to land in a
couple trees across the creek from us, an active Belted Kingfisher, a
Golden-crowned Kinglet, most species of woodpeckers, and a drumming Ruffed
Grouse.

Next we stopped by George Road where we saw hawks - a Red-tailed and
Rough-legged Hawk and a male Northern Harrier. At Dryden Lake, there were
two Common Loons and one Horned Grebe in breeding plumage, Hooded and
Red-breasted Mergansers, Redheads, Ring-necked Ducks, Gadwall, Black Ducks,
Green-winged Teal, Wood Ducks, and a Great-blue Heron. We heard, but did
not see, a Swamp Sparrow.

Lastly, we went to Herman Road Wetland in Freeville. We were rewarded with
a couple Lesser Black-backed Gulls. The additional ducks we saw for the day
were Common Mergansers and a couple Blue-winged Teal. We couldn't have
asked for better weather - sunshine and no wind. It was a perfect day to
enjoy the birds. Thanks to everyone that joined us.

Best, Ann

I went up north to check on shorebird habitat. More water was added at
Knox Marcellus since the weekend which is good news.

At the main pool on the Wildlife Drive, the water is mostly gone. The
shorebirds are quite distant. LaRue's. Eaton Marsh, and Benning still have
water and no mud. The newly created pools at the back of the Wildlife Drive
(the area south of Rte 90) have lots of mud and water with some shorebirds
including both Yellowlegs, Least and Spotted Sandpipers, Killdeer, and a
couple Semi-palmated Plovers. Fifteen Great Egrets were there, also.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Short-eared Owl Trip

2015-12-12 Thread Ann Mitchell
This afternoon seven "fair weather" enthusiastic birders joined me for a
trip to Long Point Road on a quest for Short-eared Owls. We parked at the
winery (with the owner's permission) and scanned the area for a couple
hours. We had good looks at an American Kestrel, Eastern Bluebirds, a House
Finch, Northern Harrier, and a Red-tailed Hawk. Finally, at dusk, the first
owl was spotted, then two. A total of three owls were seen. There could
have been more, but it became dark so quickly, it was hard to tell. It was
a life bird for one participant. We watched a male and female owl chasing
each other and "barking", their vocalizing being a first for some folks.
The trip was a total success!

Thanks to all who joined me and for making it such a fun trip. Of note, I
have led many Short-eared Owl trips this time of year, and the temperature
has never been this warm.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip

2016-02-19 Thread Ann Mitchell
Hi,
I am leading a trip this coming Sunday, meeting at the Lab Of O at 7:30 A.M. We
will be going around the lake returning at 4:00 P.M. There are lots of
waterfowl, raptors, and field birds around, and maybe a rarity or two will
surprise us. Dress for the weather and bring snacks. We will also make a stop
or two during the day. Please join me. If you have questions, you can reach me
at annmitchel...@gmail.com or 607-220-8448.

[cayugabirds-l] Sunday's Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip

2016-02-21 Thread Ann Mitchell
Jay, Judy, and Klaus joined me today for an awesome day of birding. The
weather was in the high 30's. It was a cloudy day with very little wind.
The lake was very calm for most of the day affording excellent viewing.
Everyone jumped in my car and we started our adventure. The stops and
highlights are as follows:

East Shore Marina - 2 Long-tailed Ducks. One was particularly beautiful.

Ladoga and the Lighthouse at Myers - 11 Wood Ducks, mostly male.
unprecedented this early in the season, 2 Horned Grebes, 4 White-winged
Scoters, American Wigeon, 1 Double-crested Cormorant, 1 Belted Kingfisher.
While at Ladoga we heard 1 or 2 Pine Siskins making their zreet calls.

Just south of Miliken Station, a dark-phase Rough-legged Hawk flew in front
of the car, briefly landing in a ditch, then flying to a nearby tree to
feast on a newly caught rodent. We watched it for awhile.

Long Point State Park - 4 Common Loons and 7 White-winged Scoters. There
were close to 100 Red-breasted Mergansers.

Aurora Boat House - We were treated to super looks at an Eared Grebe. It
was mixed in with 10 Horned Grebes. It was transitioning into breeding
plumage and we could see a hint of the yellow wisps by it's eyes.

We did stop at Cayuga to view the many swans before stopping for lunch and,
then continuing around the lake. The ice edge was quite south of Cayuga
State Park. We noticed huge rafts of Snow Geese in the middle of the lake.
One raft was so long we could hardly see the end of it. The last stop of
note was Dean's Cove where we saw the continuing Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Most of the trip was lake oriented, but we did make a side trip here and
there. One trip was to Van Dyne Spoor Road in Savannah and saw lots of
Robins, Cedar Waxwings, 2 Pileated Woodpeckers, a Red-bellied, Downy and
Hairy Woodpecker and a Northern Flicker. All in all, it was a great day.
Thanks to everyone who came!

Ann

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Visitor Center

2016-03-31 Thread Ann Mitchell
I arrived there sometime after 3:00. Dave got there shortly after I did
(unplanned but like minded). Shorebirds included one Dunlin, one Pectoral
Sandpiper, one Lesser Yellowlegs, and at least three Killdeer. Two Wilson's
Snipe were also nearby. The Pectoral Sandpiper and Dunlin stayed close
together.
Good birding,
Ann

[cayugabirds-l] Yard birds

2016-04-01 Thread Ann Mitchell
Today I had three "first of the year" birds at or under my feeders - an Eastern
Towee (1st ever in my yard too!), a Chipping Sparrow at a tray feeder, and a
Field Sparrow (which I saw at the end of the day hanging out with the Towee).
Is April Fools Day somehow trying to mess with my mind??
Good birding,
Ann

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Area Today 4/8/16

2016-04-08 Thread Ann Mitchell
There was a lone Caspian Tern at Myers Point this afternoon. A young Herring
Gull chased it for awhile. The Tern flew towards the back side of Salt Point
out of sight. Hopefully it returned to the spit.
