[cayugabirds-l] Tundra Swans at Taughannock Park

Friday around noon I saw and heard five TUNDRA SWANS flying north along the
shore of Cayuga Lake. I saw them from Taughannock Park, on the west shore
of the lake. I did not see where they landed. There were also quite a few
REDHEAD and COMMON MERGANSER still present.

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock calling in Brooktondale

Hello, just now (9 PM) I heard a single woodcock making his "peent" call in
the marshy woods behind my cottage in the Boiceville Cottages in
Brooktondale.

Thanks to all the feedback and comments. Since the bird was perched rather
than a flyover, seems like the best fit is a Eastern Screech Owl making (to
me) an unusual version of its call.

[cayugabirds-l] ID help? Whistling at night

Dear all,

I hope it's ok to ask for ID help here. Between Sibley and the Lab of O's
bird call recordings, I haven't been able to get a decent ID on a bird
heard last night.

The call was a long (1-2 s) descending *clear* whistle (not a whinny like a
typical Eastern Screech Owl), starting on a high note and ending quite low.
It was repeated 3-4 times and then followed by a repeated whistle on a
single, high note. The timbre was similar to a saw-whet owl, but the tempo
was different.

It was heard at 1 AM at the border between a field and scrubby forest.

[cayugabirds-l] Tundra swans flying over Caroline/Brooktondale

In yesterday's snowstorm I heard and then saw 18 Tundra Swans flying quite
low, traveling northwest over Boiceville Rd in Brooktondale. It looked like
they were seeking shelter in the storm and could possibly have ended up in
southern Cayuga Lake.

Live mealworms are commonly sold as live food for reptiles. I used to get
them at petstores. They're not especially cheap, though, since they do
"grow up" into beetles. You can also breed them yourself.
