I was subscribed to the list last fall but I never got around to introducing
myself. My name is Evan Barrientos and I'm a student at Cornell University.
I've been birding for about four years and I also do a lot of nature
photography.
These photos are a bit late, but I'd like

each other?

Also saw Common Grackles, a Hairy Woodpecker, and a Red-bellied Woodpecker
excavating a nest cavity. Briefly heard a Red-breasted Nuthatch.

Hey everyone,
I had a very productive 2.5 hour walk this morning in the Cornell Plantations
across the suspension bridge in Fall Creek Valley. So many Yellow-rumpeds, but
I also managed to pick out a BLACKBURNIAN, BLUE-WINGED, and BLACK-THROATED

Hello again,
Shindagin Hollow impressed me once again with its number of birds. Highlights
included a female Black-and-white Warbler gathering nest material while the
male stayed nearby. Do they nest here? Also, a RUFFED GROUSE was heard
drumming. One WILD TURKEY seen crossing the road. Three

I birded Sapsucker Woods yesterday from 8:15-10:30am, finding only moderate
activity. The entrance to the lab was filled with birds when I arrived,

This evening starting at about 7:20pm I explored the pond near the intersection
of Snyder and Mohawk Roads before listening for Woodcocks. On the pond I saw 50
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 HOODED MERGANSERS, 1 GREAT-BLUE HERON, 2 WOOD DUCKS, and
several Mallards and Canada Geese. I also

For the last 5 minutes there's been an adult male Dark-eyed Junco just 8ft away
from me foraging on the ground outside Mann Library on Cornell Campus.
Sporadically, he's been quietly singing to himself while he forages, but so
quietly that nothing further than 10ft away could hear. The bird is
appearances. Rather, it briefly overviews the incredible diversity of habitats,
landscapes, people, and lifestyles that make up the country. Hope you all take

Spent a nice 4 hours walking around the pond this morning at SSW. Lots of
sining YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS! Less activity than I had hoped for but still
good birding. Interestingly, it wasn't until around 10am that I began to see
the YRWAs. Several NORTHERN FLICKERS and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS
Here are my photos from my walk yesterday morning at Sapsucker Woods. There are
some cool shots of Northern Water Snakes Mating, Eastern Phoebes nest building,
and Yellow-rumped Warblers at eye level.
Managed to get fairly close to a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH singing at the bottom of
a ravine and a WINTER WREN that seemed to be singing in response. Watched the
LOWA singing from a perch and then forage in the rocky stream. No photos, but I
recorded some good audio. Other bird activity was mostly
I arrived a little late but the area was fairly quiet. Only heard one warbler
(BLACK-THROATED GREEN). Heard one RUFFED GROUSE on the upper north end. Saw an
immature GOLDEN EAGLE fly over. 5 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS heard singing. In the
pines on Gulf Creek Rd. I heard 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and
Amazing day for birding, try to get out if you can! Hawthorn Orchards was
filled with migrants from 7:30-10:50am today. At least 45 species and simply
too many Yellow-rumpeds to count, plus a lot of highlights. I'll send an eBird
checklist later, but here are some of the highlights:

Here are 4 close shots of an American Woodcock that I photographed last night
(May 2) in the field bordered by Snyder and Cherry Rd. north of the airport.
Hard to believe, these were taken handheld, manually focusing, and without an
external flash! Such an awesome bird and one of
I was at Arnot Forest from 1pm-4pm yesterday and did manage to hear and see a
fair number of migrants, including FOY CANADA WARBLERS. Also found two
beautiful SPRING SALAMANDERS in the creek. eBird list is below, but the best
highlight was definitely having two LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES foraging
I noticed this nest a couple weeks ago, and have made it back once to film and
photograph it. I will post photos and video as soon as I can.

Fantastic morning at Palmer Woods, Cornell Campus today, even though I got
there at 10:40am. That was my first time there and I certainly was impressed.
43 species and 15 warblers, plus beautiful and variable habitat. BAY-BREASTED
WARBLER and female MOURNING WARBLER were highlights. At first I
Migrants have all but deserted Sapsucker Woods this morning. The only
non-resident warblers I saw were 2 YELLOW-RUMPEDS. Non-warbler birding was good
though, with 53 species. List below.

Much harder to find warblers this morning, but I did find BAY-BREASTED,
WILSON'S, CHESTNUT-SIDED and BT GREEN. More interestingly, I was able to find
nesting cavities of NORTHERN FLICKER, BC CHICKADEE, and YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER. I was also surprised by seeing so many WOOD THRUSHES in one

Would the person who corrected David's ID care to share with the group how to
reliable separate the two species from a view like David's photo? I imagine
this is a very common confusion and it would be good to clarify to avoid future
false alarms, and just for the sake of bird IDs in general.

I birded Montezuma NWR Friday afternoon, hitting all the main spots (see
comments below). The AMERICAN AVOCET was still present at Puddler's , but did
not see the Franklin's Gull. Also surprised to see 10 SANDHILL CRANES at Knox
Marcellus and 1 AMERICAN BITTERN at Puddler's. Complete
you enjoy it!

Hi Claire,
This sounds like a really cool observation (and yes it is a Great Horned
Owl), but in the future I would advise others not to post specific
locations of potentially vulnerable birds. If this bird has been abandoned
and/or isn't doing well, it would be better to not send people there who
