Re: [cayugabirds-l] Waterthrush directions clarification

2023-04-27 Thread Lisa Wood
There were two singing Louisiana Waterthrushes there yesterday
mid-afternoon. One was on the Sweedler (west) side of Town Line Road, down
by the footbridge. Got good looks at it there, bobbing along brookside.

The other was on the Thayer (east) side of the road, audible but not
visible farther upstream as I walked in that direction on Tom's Trail.

I just had a couple of Blackpoll Warblers at Stewart Park--one near the

[cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbird @ CLO

2016-01-23 Thread Lisa Wood
Dave Nutter and I (and a small group of bird-walk participants) saw the Rusty
Blackbird a few times this morning near the Lab of O feeder garden between 9:00
and 11:00. We all had fabulous looks at the bird's rusty-edged feathers and
white eyes through Dave's scope.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Singing birds

2011-10-14 Thread Lisa Wood
Yes, and the annual occurrence of autumnal recrudescence:

The Autumnal Recrudescence of the Amatory Urge

When the birds are cacaphonic in the trees and on the verge
Of the fields in mid-October when the cold is like a scourge.
It is not delight in winter that makes feathered voices surge,
But autumnal recrudescence of the amatory urge.

When the frost is on the punkin' and when leaf and branch diverge,
Birds with hormones reawakened sing a paean, not a dirge.
What's the reason for their warbling? Why on earth this late-year
  splurge?
The autumnal recrudescence of the amatory urge.

A posting about this usually occurs annually as well. :)

This morning I came across a flock of migrants along Hunt Hill Rd.
which included song, white-throated and chipping sparrows, towhee,
many juncos, many ruby-crowned kinglets which were singing, one
hermit thrush, several robins and one singing blue-headed vireo. All
of these birds were in one small shrubby area. I was very surprised
 to hear the singing!

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker

2011-05-05 Thread Lisa Wood
I was stunned to look out my window a few minutes ago to see a brilliant male
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in my yard at the bottom of Culver Road (southwest town
of Ithaca). The bird landed first on a small sunflower seed feeder where two
brilliant male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were feeding. I was busy appreciating
the black/white/red spring extravaganza (and the sunshine) when it intensified
as the woodpecker flew to the feeder, then to a branch of the big maple above,
appeared to cache a piece of suet, then disappeared to the east. I haven't been
able to refind the bird as of this writing.

This isn't far from where, last year (?) someone reported a RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER at Old Hundred at the corner of Bostwick Rd. and Five Mile Dr.

About half an hour ago, from the parking lot at 3109 N. Triphammer Rd.

WILL calling. It was instantly recognizable despite the competing
spring peepers, toads, and traffic!
