Perhaps this *Google Map of **Finger Lakes Birding Sites *would be a useful

Hundreds of birding sites in the Cayuga and Seneca Lake basin are on the
map, most with a brief description. Click Collaborate and you can add

[cayugabirds-l] seeking binocular donation

2013-04-19 Thread Erica Marx
Hi,

I am piggybacking a bit on Ken's Living Bird binocular review email to say that
if all this new binocular talk results in you upgrading your binos, I am
seeking the donation of a few pairs of nice binoculars for a community-run
ecotourism project in Taveuni, Fiji.

Chris and I (and baby Kieran) were in Lavena for ~2 weeks last month, and it
was the highlight of our time in Fiji. You can read reviews on Trip Advisor
for the
coastalhttp://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g297562-d308618-Reviews-L=%20avena_Coastal_Walk-Taveuni_Island.html

walkhttp://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g297562-d308618-Reviews-L=%20avena_Coastal_Walk-Taveuni_Island.html
  and the
lodgehttp://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g297562-d1380358-Rev=%20iews-Lavena_Lodge-Taveuni_Island.html
to get the idea. This is a place where many international birders come to
see the
Silktailhttp://www.birdlife.org/datazone/speciesfactsheet.php?id=3D61=%2042
, Orange
Dovehttp://www.birdlife.org/datazone/speciesfactsheet.php?i=%20d=3D2702
, and other sought after birds but they of course bring their own binoculars
then leave. The guides in the village do not have binoculars (our guide
had been working with tourists for 17 years, and he did not even own shoes
let alone a camera or binoculars!). We spent enough time with a couple of
the guides to know that they would appreciate and care for binoculars if
they owned them (which is not always the case with donated materials).
Everything they know about the birds is via their time without binoculars
and the occasional time they have a chance to look through a tourist's
binos.

So I left motivated to find at least a couple pairs of binoculars to send them.
I'm getting my Nikon Monarchs repaired so if you have any binoculars to
donate, please contact me!

Oh, and if you are going to Fiji soon let me know so I can send you with the
binoculars to deliver them!

thanks much and happy birding!

   Hi all,

Here is a heads up that we are soon going to conduct another giant
binocular review for Living Bird magazine and web site — we have more than
100 binocular models ready to be reviewed! Jessie Barry and I will be
leading the review and writing up the results.

As with past optics reviews we've conducted, we are inviting all
interested birders (of all skill levels!) to participate in the review and
contribute your opinions and subjective scores for as many models as you
choose. We also welcome any young birders to help us select the most
 kid-friendly binoculars.

We will conduct the review at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology sometime
during the first two weeks of May — probably on multiple days. Stay tuned
 for more details!

[cayugabirds-l] SFO volunteers needed

2012-02-26 Thread Erica Marx
Hi,

I am looking for 2 volunteers for this year's Spring Field Ornithology
class, March 21- May 13th.

First, a volunteer for Wednesday nights to help set up and clean up from
the Wednesday night lectures, in exchange for free participation in the
lecture portion of the class.

Second, for free field trips, I am looking for a computer-efficient,
detail-oriented person to compile and tally the weekly checklists from the
field trips. This involves getting the checklists from the 4-8 trip
leaders, entering the data online, and formatting the compiled data to a
pdf that I will then upload to the class website. The challenge with this
job is getting all the data entered formatted by Monday so the checklists
can be on the website by Tuesday morning.

Finally, I hope you saw Peter Cashwell's great article about SFO, You Must
Believe in Spring, in the latest issue of Living Bird?
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/Page.aspx?pid=2404ac=acIf you've taken
SFO, you'll recognize familiar faces, and if you haven't taken the class,
it will make you happy about spring coming back here soon!

[cayugabirds-l] 2012 Spring Field Ornithology registration opens today, Dec 15

2011-12-15 Thread Erica Marx
Hello birding friends,

Nothing makes the impending winter seem shorter than to realize that Spring
Field Ornithology begins in just 3 months! We're opening registration
earlier this year so you have a chance give SFO as a gift this holiday
season.

For those of you not familiar with the course, Spring Field Ornithology is
a combination field and lecture 8-week course that has been taught by the
Cornell Lab of Ornithology for over 30 years. The class consists of
Wednesday night lectures, weekend field trips (Saturdays or Sundays) to central
NY birding hotspots, and two optional overnight trips. The lecture section
also includes two visits to the bird collections of the Cornell Museum of
Vertebrates and a nighttime 'owl prowl.' The overnight trips go to
Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and Cape May, New Jersey. You may sign
up for the lecture and field trip sections separately.

Instruction is by Steve Kress, Vice President for Bird Conservation for
National Audubon, guest lecturers from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and
local birding experts. The field trips are organized by beginning,
intermediate and advanced birding levels, with instruction tailored to the
interests and abilities of your group. There is a sense of community that
builds throughout the course, and many people enjoy the trips so much that
they return to take them year after year with their friends!

The course begins Wednesday, March 21 and runs through May 13th.
Registration opens today, Thursday, December 15th and there is a $10
discount on the field trip section for registrations received by Feb 1st.

*Gift Special* - If you purchase SFO as a gift, or if you have a friend in
this year's class who is taking the class for the first time with you, your
friend will receive a free copy of the Birds of Sapsucker Woods book on the
first day of class. If you'd like to receive the book for the holidays,
just let me know.

See the website to watch a video about the course, look at photos, review
the course schedule and enroll at* **http://www.birds.cornell.edu/sfo * If
you have questions, feel free to contact me at sfocl...@cornell.edu or call
607-254-2466.

Thanks and happy holidays!
