[cayugabirds-l] My FOY Rusty Blackbird

2023-03-04 Thread Htva Waxwing
While out driving along Fitzgerald Road in Schuyler County this morning, I came
up on a mixed species foraging flock along side the road. Closer inspection
with binoculars showed many Robins, several Cardinals, a few Starlings and
Juncos and, what I thought at first was a Red-winged Blackbird. While the body
structure and bill were the same as a RWBL, the body plumage was all jet black
and it had a yellow iris. I took a few pictures of this Rusty, which I will
upload to accompany my eBird list.

Then, after driving a bit further down Fitzgerald, I came upon a few Horned
Larks and one lone Snow Bunting. Pictures will be coming soon to join that
eBird list.

Finally! Some roadside birds this winter!

[cayugabirds-l] FOY for me, White-crowned Sparrows

2022-04-16 Thread Htva Waxwing
I was parked along Fitzgerald Rd. Just South of Rt. 79 in Schuyler county. 2
WCSP were seen along side of the road and one was heard in the distance. I took
some photos and will add them to my eBird list in a few hours.

[cayugabirds-l] FOY GBH

A Great Blue Heron is walking around the bank of our still frozen pond here
outside of Mecklenberg this morning. It looks a bit strange to me to see one on

This morning had my FOY Red-winged at the feeder. Kind of bizarre seeing
Red-winged at one feeder and 3 Redpolls at the other at the same time. Summer

[cayugabirds-l] Special visitor at our pond

2020-05-14 Thread Htva Waxwing
At about 5:30 tonight, as I walked around our half acre pond, I scared up a
Least Bittern that was at the pond edge. I got to within 15 feet of it when if
flew up in front of me, which startled me, and it flew 50 feet directly away
from me heading for a pine tree. It flew into the pine, but I couldn’t see it
land. Never found it again. I feel badly that I made it leave a place that
perhaps it was going to spend the night.

[cayugabirds-l] FOY in Mecklenberg, too

2020-05-01 Thread Htva Waxwing
3 Wood Thrushes, a Catbird and Grosbeak are all FOY for me here on my property.
Still have Purple Finches, and up to 9 White-throated Sparrows - morn than I
had all winter. Seems yesterday’s weather system pushed, or pulled a number of
migrants.

[cayugabirds-l] Brown Pelican near Oswego

2019-05-20 Thread Htva Waxwing
Late this afternoon I was at Sunset Bay Park on the Lake Ontario shore East of
Oswego watching and photographing about 55 Caspian Terns and I did a
double-take when I saw and immature Brown Pelican floating about one hundred
yards off shore. So I turned my camera on it. I continued to shoot bursts as
it flew toward me and over me so closely that it was difficult to keep it in
the viewfinder. As it flew, it was being harassed by any nearby gull and tern
in much the same manner as a Red-tailed Hawk would be by a flock of smaller
birds.

I got a few nice shots of it in the water, flying solo and being harassed.
Unfortunately, I left my laptop at home and I have no way to get the photos off
the camera’s SD card. I’ll have to wait until I get back home later Wednesday
night to get them into my computer and convert them from RAW into JPEG to get
them up to eBird. But I couldn’t wait until then to tell all of you CBC folks
about it.

[cayugabirds-l] Chipping Sparrow fallout

At 2:25 PM Monday, there are at least 26 Chipping Sparrows on the ground under
my feeders! Plus that male Pine Warbler is still here and a couple of Towhees.
However I did not see the Fox Sparrow today so far.
