[cayugabirds-l] Snow Bunting

2014-01-03 Thread Nena J. Winand
The past 2 days I've had a snow bunting visiting my (black oil sunflower)
feeders in the early morning. That's a first for my property (presumably they
are not uncommon out in the neighborhood farm fields), particularly for a
feeder bird.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Red-tailed Hawk pair sightings

2013-01-05 Thread Nena J. Winand
Interesting post Dave, as I had a pair hunting over here at my home (30 Torok
Road, Groton) yesterday. We had a pair here 2 years ago but something killed
one in my pasture (and left enough to identify), and in the summer I only ever
saw a solitary red-tailed hawk. This was the first time I'd seen a pair since,
and I would also guess these were a male and female. I am not sure where they
nest, but probably north of my farm between Torok Road and Sovocol Hill Road
where there are tall trees and structures.

[cayugabirds-l] Bird hawk heaven

2012-12-30 Thread Nena J. Winand
Yesterday we had a juvenile Coopers hawk hunting (unsuccessfully) at our
feeders. He had not honed his craft and positioned himself poorly (he/she,
that is). We have a mature sharpie that is much more polished (posted about
him before). Just a few minutes ago we had a kestrel strike, followed by a war
with several crows, who briefly ran off the perp. and tried to abscond with the
meal. The kestrel rallied and dove back in and airlifted his dinner much to
the dismay of the thugs! We are at 30 Torok Road in Groton.

[cayugabirds-l] Dinner guest

2012-09-19 Thread Nena J. Winand
We just had a sharp-shinned hawk join us for dinner. He struck (prey
unidentifiable in seconds) right in front of our deck windows and spent about
40 min on the ground disassembling and eating his catch. His eating style was
very animated. Truly a remarkable sight. I saw a sharpie (likely the same
bird) hunting from a tree right next to the deck last year. This puts him in a
perfect place to strafe our feeders-sort of like Wegmans for bird hawks.

[cayugabirds-l] Predator

2012-02-03 Thread Nena J. Winand
I just had a mink take a woodpecker (downy I think-smallish)! I have never
seen that before. Yikes! She lives on my pond (for better or worse).
Apparently she is not getting an adequate intake of bass.
