[cayugabirds-l] our birds are picky, only Sunflower seeds for them

2024-01-31 Thread Nigel Dyson-Hudson
Some folks on CAYUGABIRDS-L fill their feeders with different seeds -
Sunflower, Niger, etc. We have tried this in the past with Sunflower and
Niger seed feeds. Even the Goldfinches barely touched our Niger seed. It
was "fresh" from Agway, stored in the fridge until put out. Forget about
the mixes with Milo and Corn.
So now we just put out Sunflower seed, spread some seed on trays on the
ground. Last winter we had a Mourning Dove that figured out how to land
on our rectangular metal feeder. Which was quite entertaining to watch.
Since this feeder has a squirrel baffle on the post, we have used a
stick to fix the movable perch in place.

[cayugabirds-l] like "The Birds," large flock of Starlings nr West Danby ~08:50

2018-03-01 Thread Nigel Dyson-Hudson
We just had a large flock of Starlings come through just north of West
Danby ~8:50. It was like a scene from "The Birds." The lawn was black with
birds.

Then about 09:00 a smaller group of several dozen came through.

Yesterday, Wed, was when we actually got 6 RWB instead of just one or two.
The fields are alive with the sounds of RWB.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Newfield Red-winged Blackbirds

2018-01-04 Thread Nigel Dyson-Hudson
Dave, I reported to eBird on Sun 12/31 a Red-Winged Blackbird male at
~10:45 am hanging around our bird feed. I also attached a photo to the
report. I haven't seen him since but he might have come when I wasn't
looking. Now if he had only waited until 1 Jan. We used to see RWB males
coming to our bird feeders about the 3rd week of March, now it seems that
they come back the 1st week of March. Now I wonder when the West Danby
Herrons will show up.

Nigel, we are about 1 mile north of West Danby off NY Rt 34/96. Test Rd off
Rt 13, just south of Ithaca, the landmark is the self storage place, the
pump house with the red light on top, on the West side of Rt 13.

[cayugabirds-l] OT? FYO bear nr West Danby

2016-02-01 Thread Nigel Dyson-Hudson
This morning we got up and noticed that our bird feeders were on the ground.
Upon closer inspection I found that the 4 hook rod was bent almost
flat to the ground - I should have gotten a picture before
straightening it.
The stand-alone wooden box feeder had the plastic hinge for the lid
torn and the suet block on that feeder had fallen out and had chew
marks all around.
So we are taking the bird feeders down tonight.

We are just north of VanBuskirk Gulf Rd and west of NY Rt 34/96.

Our home designed deer fence doesn't seem to be damaged - it must be
strong enough for the bear to climb. (4 ft field fence wire 2 runs
high - cable tied together; heavy duty road sign U posts from Seneca
Supply - 10 ft so 8 ft exposed, but next time I would use 12 ft; rebar
woven through the wire at 16 ft intervals between the U posts; As
grape vines grow on the fence scraps of wood or tree branches are
added for bracing the wire.) Nigel
