Re: [cayugabirds-l] Orioles

2019-05-15 Thread Sally Eller
We had 3 or 4 Orioles at our feeders yesterday. They were enjoying the
hummingbird feeders and devoured an orange. Hope they are still here today!

Also, had hummingbirds on the 10th.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey nests Towns of Romulus, Varick and Fayette

2019-04-23 Thread Sally Eller
The nest which is located about 2 miles south of Canoga on the western
shore is active and appears to incubating. Route 89.
The same is true for the nest on Ernsberger Rd, just east of Knapp Winery,
Town of Varick.
Both are on NYSEG poles.

Alas, no activity again this year for the NYSEG nest on Rte 89 across from
Dean's Cove in Romulus.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Salt Point ospreys fledging

2018-07-18 Thread Sally Eller
The osprey nest south of Canoga has been active all summer with almost
always a parent sighted there. They seem to be feeding. To my surprise, the
nest on Ernsberger Road, near Knapp Winery, is also active. It had appeared
abandoned in June but is not active, I think there are chicks. The nest at
Dean's Cove Boat Launch remains inactive. I haven't seen a bird there all
spring/summer. These nests are all on NYSEG poles.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Small number of feeder birds

2017-12-17 Thread Sally Eller
We are experiencing the same small number of feeder birds as Glenn reports.
I would also guess we have about 20% of our usual number of feeder birds.

Has this been discussed here recently? If so, I apologize that I missed it.

Is it possible that West Nile Virus is affecting our feeder birds? I know
that at the Finger Lakes Raptor Center in Lodi there have been many, many
raptors afflicted with WNV. I keep wondering if it affecting our songbirds,
woodpeckers, crows, etc. A quick Google search brought me to this article.

http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/11/west-nile-virus-still-wiping-out-birds-across-north-america

Indeed, we do have our usual chickadee flock, but even our usually high
numbers of Juncos are scarce this winter.

If it is WNV, what should we be doing with our feeding stations?

The platform which NYSEG placed on the pole that had an Osprey nest last

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bald eagles?

2015-02-19 Thread Sally Eller
We see Bald Eagles nearly every day here on the western shore of Cayuga
Lake, about 25 miles north of Ithaca. They are usually cruising along
searching for an injured or unwary duck. When we see the flock of ducks
suddenly take off we look up for the eagle and he/she is almost always
swinging by. Lately we have usually seen an immature, and this morning
she/he was perched on a tree in front of our house. A very large bird!

Hummingbirds, at least one, still here today. Don't think they are migrants.

[cayugabirds-l] Close Encounter w/ SEOUL

2013-02-15 Thread Sally Eller
We are about 80% sure it was a Short-eared Owl who flew very close to our
car as we were driving at Rt 96 and CR 129 in Ovid, 40 min ago. Definitely
not a Northern Harrier.
Question --- would this be legitimate to put on my GBBC for today?

We have at least 30 Redpolls here at Blue Heron Point, on the west shore of
the lake. Blue Heron Point is just north of Elm Beach. These cute little
guys are going through Nyger seed at a rapid rate! And my large flock of
Goldfinches are not happy with the competition!

[cayugabirds-l] Fwd: Male RTHU fall migration

2012-09-08 Thread Sally Eller

To: Sally Eller

SALLY . . .

Thanks for your note and kind words about my Web site.

No one knows for sure the function of early departure by adult male
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in autumn. I have two thoughts:

--The male's work is done by early August at most locales, so there's no
sense hanging around and competing with all the young birds that have
started to show up. Adult females may still be on the nest tending to
chicks at that time and leave somewhat later.

--My work in the Neotropics has shown that male RTHU are just as
territorial in Costa Rica as they are on the breeding grounds. Maybe they
need to go south early to find a winter territory, too.

Best wishes,

BILL

Thanks so much and your web site is terrific~

I am wondering why the males leave earlier than the females in the fall? I
know that they return in May earlier to establish territory for mating, but
why do they leave earlier in the fall?
