Re: [cayugabirds-l] Ominous

2017-05-28 Thread Susan Gateley
It might have been late for the little hummers but I've seen a couple of
the 'regulars' around here on south shore of lake ontario for two weeks or
so

also as for other bird notes had a weird sad discovery on boat- the
starboard ventilator cowling and dorade box contained three dead tree
swallows when we commissioned the boat two weeks ago. The birds looked
quite deteriorated like not recently dead. I've never seen such a thing
before- I'm guessing they were ??migrating?? and saw the hole of the
cowling as a good place to spend the night and then got trapped and
couldn't get out?? Very weird.

[cayugabirds-l] cormorant photos

2015-11-23 Thread Susan Gateley
Ahoy birders all,

I am doing an educational video on Lake Ontario and its problems and what
is/needs to be done about them.

I'd like to get some photos of cormorants (double crested), especially
islands that they have impacted. I have some video of cormorants, but was
unable to schedule a visit to any of the rookery islands.

Does anybody have some still photos I could use? Little Galloo or Snake or
other places that have been impacted by excess guano?

If you have a photo you can e mail it to me su...@silverwaters.com and tell
me how to credit it.
And can anyone point me to a reference as to if they are native or
"invasive" on Lake Ontario? I have seen both statements on the Internet.

Ahoy bird watchers,

An environmentally minded ecologically sensitive professional videographer

Getting the youngsters as they learn and perfect soaring and flying would

Thank you very much. The video would be useful for awareness and education

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Brown pelican off Poplar Beach

2015-06-05 Thread Susan Gateley
Hey there were 2 brown pellies up on Sodus Bay a few years ago- why not?

No, I wasn't at the Brewgarden. There was a brown pelican off Poplar Beach
cruising and doing the classic drop to the water. I have a passable photo
and three witnesses. At one point it was being harassed by gulls after
which it took off toward the south. Mike Duttweiler

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Dispatching house sparrows ... 5/18/15

2015-05-18 Thread Susan Gateley
not really a bird watching note but here goes.

we are roofing a shed and had to take a nest down.

It was a phoebee nest with four almost white eggs and a COWBIRD egg,

Did we do the poor birdie a favor? Will she find another site and re-build
I wonder? Without a cowbird?

I took down all my nestboxes except for the one that House Wrens have
favored for years and already had a pair defending it from the damn House
Sparrow (and the one covering a woodpecker hole in our front wall, the
entry of which is plugged.) As I watched the tiny wrens ferociously
defending their home (the entry hole of which appeared to be too big to
allow the HOSP to enter), I hoped that perhaps the wrens would win by
killing the HOSP so I wouldn't have to. I still hear the wren song but
haven't heard the horrible, monotonous cheeping of a HOSP since I witnessed
the battle. So I'm hoping that Team House Wren gave that HOSP some of his
 own medicine.

If I ever, gods forbid, need to dispatch House Sparrows, I would be happy
to pay someone to do it for me as I am a big, squeamish baby who can't kill
things. Otherwise I might just have to give all my nestboxes away to
 someone tougher.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2015-03-26 Thread Susan Gateley
Yesterday with strong south winds in late AM many many turkey vultures were
zooming at tree top level along the Lake Ontario shore line, heading east
at high speed! First big flight of soaring birds I've seen up here (
Wolcott- Fair Haven area)

I was already headed to Myers this morning when I got word of a
Blue-winged Teal being there. I didn't find it, but I did have a fine
consolation prize: An OSPREY flew over me when I was near the lighthouse,
last seen powering north over the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake. As far as I
know this is the first report in the Cayuga Lake Basin this year.
