Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mystery bird

That's a Yellow-rumped Warbler. A bit of yellow can be seen high on the side,
and a little tuft poking pout at the rump too.

I’ve been editing some pictures I took last fall and have one I can’t identify.
It kind of looks like a pipit, but doesn’t match any picture in Sibley.  Can
anyone please ID for me?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Red-throated Loon in field near Game Farm

2018-01-06 Thread phil mc
I was there about then, missed the loon, but I did help pull that Ford SUV out
of the ditch on Stevenson by the farm. Your mitzvah makes a better story and
the Loon probably didn't have AAA to help him!

I went to the game farm today to census crows and try to find some year birds

of farm where the Black Vultures have been hanging out. I didn’t see Black
Vultures, but I noticed a RED-THROATED LOON sitting in the snow in the field
north of the farm! Ten feet into Dryden!

Although the loon made a pitiful effort to “run” away from me, it was pretty
simple to wrap it up in a blanket and pick it up. Its wings and feet were
functioning well, and I didn’t see any blood, injuries, or abrasions on it, so
I decided to take it to Cayuga Lake and release it.

It did not understand, of course, anything I was trying to do for it, but it
knew what the lake was. As I was carrying it down to the shore at East Shore
Park, it started lunging forward in my hands and making running motions with
its feet. It swam away quickly when I released it, dove, came up, flapped, and
started preening.

Not the way I thought my day was going to start.

I have a photo in my checklist at

Can anyone verify the two birds near the southeast shore of Stewart park?  They
look like immature Double-breasted Cormorants with yellow beaks (caps on
cormorant? Or no caps?). Seen today around noon. Thank you!  It is so serene
down there now!  Gorgeous!

[cayugabirds-l] Odd (hybrid) goose at Stewart Park

2014-11-22 Thread phil mc
What looked to be a Canada/domestic goose cross in the area nearest the
entrance to Stewart Park
Photo here:    bird of the day

| bird of the dayOnline reports had cackling geese hanging around with the
Canada geese in West Concord, MA, so I decided to go see if I could find them.
I headed out to have a look and found a hundred or so geese floating in the
back of Warner's Pond. |
