[cayugabirds-l] thrush fallout this am
Over my section of south Danby, it turned out to be a pretty thin flight of Swainson's (no Gray-cheekeds) in the fallout this morning -- perhaps 100 calls from less than 20 individuals, just guessing, with most of the action between 6AM-6:15AM. [cayugabirds-l] Thrush migration
Greetings Birders, Should be a nice fallout of thrushes in the morning -- lots of Swainson's with Gray-cheeked's in the mix -- especially from about 5:30AM to 6:15AM; perhaps the best thrush flight call listening of the season. They are moving over now but are higher up and the calls are fainter. Interpreting birds and other biological targets on NEXRAD radar is not that simple to describe in words, but once you know what to look for, it is easy to recognize and fascinating to follow. Here's a link that has lots of information on birds etc. and radar: http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/birdrad/ Bill E From: "Eben McLane" Sent: Monday, August 22, 2011 10:47 PM To: "Cauyga Birds" Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Can we see migrating birds on weather radar? [cayugabirds-l] Raptor migration over Danby
Steady flight of migrating raptors this afternoon over Danby (50+ in 2 hours): Birds were high and mostly singles headed straight NE. Red-taileds, Broad-wingeds and unid. buteos predominated. Notable were three Bald Eagles, two adults and one Imm. (2-3 yr old). I was amazed at how high birds were late in the day - the two adult balds were kettling ~2000 ft above ground level at 5:30PM. re: [cayugabirds-l] CayugaRBA GRAY KINGBIRD Van Dyne
Astounding! That's about 3 miles from the location where a Gray Kingbird was found around this time of year in 1987 (23 years ago), and under similar circumstances. I recall former basin birder Dick Evans telling me that someone had reported one and none from local birding community followed up on it thinking it was likely a mistaken ID, as is frequently the case with this species. Then finally three weeks later it was found for many to see. What a treat for folks attending the NYSOA meeting in nearby Auburn, NY. I wonder if the meeting's paper session started on time this afternoon? ;) Bill E From: 6072292...@vtext.com Sent: Saturday, October 23, 2010 12:14 PM To: cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu Subject: [cayugabirds-l] CayugaRBA GRAY KINGBIRD Van Dyne CayugaRBA GRAY KINGBIRD Van Dyne Spoor Rd & Seneca St by Dominic Sherony --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ -- -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [cayugabirds-l] More night flight over Ithaca
Just light calling tonight here in Danby at 1700-ft asl. The clouds are skimming the tree tops and a refreshing mist wafts around. Besides the species Ken mentioned, Green Heron has been a regular caller (5 calling sequences). Bill E From: "Kenneth Victor Rosenberg" Sent: Friday, September 10, 2010 12:13 AM To: "Kenneth Victor Rosenberg" , "cb" Subject: Re: [cayugabirds-l] More night flight over Ithaca In spite of the steady drizzle, I heard about 70 thrush-like calls over my house in 30 minutes between 11:20 and 11:50 PM tonight. At least half sounded like classic VEERY to me, but many of the rest were probably ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. I only heard 3-4 calls that seemed typical for SWAINSON'S THRUSH. Not as many "zeep" notes as last night, but seemingly more variety. Conditions looked like they could be great at the Cornell stadium, which (I think) was lighting up the sky to the south of me. KEN On 9/9/10 9:17 PM, "Ken Rosenberg" wrote: Hi all, I was only able to listen for a short while last night, between 12:45 and 1 AM, but there were many calls over my house in northeast Ithaca - and the ratio seemed different from what Jay reported. In 15 minutes, I estimated 40 VEERIES, only 5 SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, and one clear GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, plus about 20 warbler "zeeps." I must admit that each fall I am rusty on Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in early September, so at least some of my "Veeries" may have been grosbeaks (according to Jay et al's numbers) -- but there were definitely many more Veeries than Swainson's in the time I was listening. I'm curious is others have other results to report?
