[cayugabirds-l] Great Egret, Freeville
Today while walking the dog on the Freeville rail trail I flushed a large, white wading bird with a yellow bill, dark legs, and tail plumes. I wanted to rule out a white morph GBH, so I ran home and grabbed my bins, and re-found the bird walking around in the middle of the Freeville marsh. With the bins, I could make out the lack of any crest, definitely dark legs, and greenish eye/lores. I also saw the white tail plumes indicating a breeding adult. The bird was happily feeding so it might stay a while. Greg -- (copy & paste any URL below, then modify any text "_DOT_" to a period ".") [cayugabirds-l] great egret
just now landed, and remains, at the Stewart Park pond across from the playground. An interesting interaction after it landed right next to a great blue heron. The heron seemed to strike an aggressive pose as it stalked the egret along the edge of the pond at a distance of about 15 feet behind. The egret seemed not to care, but after a minute it flew across to the far shore and landed a more respectful distance away. [cayugabirds-l] Great Egret--Hile School Rd wetland pm 28Jul19
Seen S of Hile School Rd, central wetland, preening calmly in dead trees—two probably juvenile Great Blue Herons in tree next door. Found as light was low at 855 pm tonight—sans binocs, etc. Ran back home to get scope—not trusting my size estimates in deep dusk. Dark legs, marginally smaller than herons, couldn’t confirm yellow bill against its feathers but—well, there aren’t a lot of options. Bill slender and long, less robust than GBH—at least as seen in near darkness. Anne Anne B. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Great Egret at Sapsucker Woods 6-13
Great Egret is still barely visible at the east side of the pond about midway back as viewed from the area Diane describes. It is partially hidden by trees, but being bright white helps in picking it up. It occasionally walks around within a small area so be patient and it should show itself. [cayugabirds-l] Great Egret (?) Thomas Road?
Hi Cayuga Birders, Driving on Rte 79 towards Ithaca today, I caught a short look at a bird that I think was a great egret. I was not able to slow down or turnaround, so hopefully someone else can confirm the bird. The bird was near the Caroline Elementary School, but across 79 from the school in a flooded field. What I remember seeing was a large white bird with long black legs, a long neck and a long yellowish bill. My brain said immediately, Great Egret. But I wasn't able to stop, slow town, or turn around to confirm. Has anyone else seen this bird around? Was I seeing something? Was it a misleading piece of lawn statueage? I hope someone else will see the bird and confirm that I wasn't hallucinating! In overdue news, Alberto Lopez, Nancy Chen and I covered much of the east half of Tompkins county on Saturday morning. Of the 122 species that we bumped into before 2 PM, highlights were 2 Soras calling and a Snipe barking at Goetchius, a flyover American Bittern at the Park Preserve (South), expected but awesome breeding warblers at this site and at Hammond Hill (Mourning, Canada, Hooded, LA Waterthrush, Prairie, etc), Bonaparte's Gulls and Orchard Orioles at Myers and Salt Points, respectively, lingering ducks, a Red-breasted Merganser and Horned Grebe at Stewart Park, and Cape May Warblers and a Philadelphia Vireo at Sapsucker Woods. Plus one frustrating glimpse at what may have been a goshawk at the Park Preserve, a bird that, like so many others, will remain unidentified into eternity. Sure is fun birding this time of year.
