[cayugabirds-l] Kestrel over Hanshaw marshland

2020-04-26 Thread anneb . clark
For those keeping track of kestrels, one was perched over the marshland east of
Hanshaw just s of the Neimi rd intersection. With a red- tailed hawk. But where
is there not a red- tailed hawk??

Speaking of which, yesterday April 25th, I watched and have pictures of a red-
tail pair above 302 E Upland rd where one broke a small maple branch off and
sailed around the pines with it. Its presumed mate joined it and they turned
west and plummeted (both in wings folded stoop, stick still in bill of the one)
perhaps over or just beyond the Parkway. As some know, at least one pair is
resident there. But are they renesting?? Maybe owl disruption??

[cayugabirds-l] Kestrel, Barn Swallows and Crow (OOB)

2017-08-17 Thread AB Clark
I watched an interesting sequence around 7 am and got some of it in some really
bad pictures. For Basin lovers, all birds in question also use the part of Ed
Hill Road that is within the Basin. Indeed the Kestrel may be one of the young
ones raised in house eaves on Ed Hill Road, and if not, a parent. (I have to
see the pictures on my laptop before deciding)

A Kestrel was perched atop a sunning-favored dead tree. This tree is used by
multiple species, from Mourning Doves to Redtail Hawks—early am and late pm.
Good view of sun in both directions?

It was being dive bombed by two very aggressive Barn Swallows and was raising
its wings repeatedly to protect its head. (Empathy…our barn door in my
childhood was guarded by defensive Barn Swallows) But it refused to leave
between attacks. I don’t know that I have ever seen Barn Swallows swooping a
falcon or hawk.

Then an American Crow arrived, swooped down and that was too much. The Kestrel
left. The crow didn’t even land, but apparently drove off the Kestrel on
general principles, and continued on toward the field, barely getting off
course.

I guess young Barn Swallows in particular might make occasional Kestrel prey?
I watched a Kestrel the other evening capturing something high in the air
column, perhaps Green Darner dragonflies.

[cayugabirds-l] Kestrel Haven end of season Northern Saw-whet Owl report

2015-12-01 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
The Fat Lady Hooted at Kestrel Haven!

We brought in nets on the 30th to end a so-so season and leave us longing for
another 2012!( when we banded well over 200 saw-whets) We banded 50 new birds,
had 3
repeats and, for the very first time, had zero foreigns and none of our birds
visiting other stations. We made a stab at LEOWs without success.

Our 50 breakdown to 1 AHY, 8 ASY, 6 SY and 35 HY, a very normal distribution.
It was
much the same with sex ratio as we had 84% female, 7 Unknowns and 1 definite
male.

We banded from 01 October through 29 November on 39 nights logging 622 net hours
which works out to one bird every 12 net hours.

Our best night was 12 on 22 October. First bird banded was 14 October and last
was
29 November.

Although the season started very slowly with birds being caught to our west,
east
and south, it all came out as pretty normal. It did give us an opportunity to
add to
our knowledge/assumptions of migration dynamics here. We believe "our" birds fly
south directly over Lake Ontario as well as some that skirt the lake's western
edge.
This of course is strongly dependent on wind speed and direction. Those birds
skirting the eastern edge of the lake tend to then follow a path down the
eastern
shore of Cayuga Lake and miss us by a good 40 miles. In previous years owls
banded
here showed a strong tendency to fly south by southwest based on visits to other
stations. This year That's what makes it fun as we keep learning.

John and Sue

To decode our bander lingo. These are all Northern Saw-whet Owls (NSWO). LEOW
is
Long-eared Owl which we tried due to a tremendous fallout of same in Ontario
this
fall. AHY is after hatching year but we can't determine the age closer than
"adult", ASY is a bird at least 3 years old, SY is a second year bird, HY is a
bird
hatched this year . For the most part molt intricacies are such that we can't
age
NSWOs beyond ASY. TY, third year, and ATY (after third year) calls are iffy at
best
as we have huge variations in molt patterns within this species.

[cayugabirds-l] Kestrel Haven Fall Banding Summary

2012-12-11 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Subject: Autumn 2012 Kestrel Haven summary

This fall we only banded slightly under a thousand passerines and then switched
to
owls in late September. One of the first birds netted at dusk was our first
Whip-poor-will! What a thrill!

We pulled our nets last week after a couple of unsuccessful weeks of trying for
Boreal Owls that had been surging southward in Ontario. The last Northern
Saw-whet
Owl was banded on 20 November although we've heard saw-whets vocalizing since
that
date.

Next year is going to be a tough one after the stellar show put on by saw-whets
this
fall! We more than tripled our previous best season handling a total of 251
owls.
They break down as follows:

New saw-whet bandings accounted for 243, 3 were repeats, 2 were foreign return
HY-Fs
that were banded at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory, Picton, Ontario,
earlier
in the fall, 2 were new Eastern Screech owls-grays and 1 was a return of a
Screech
Owl banded last fall. Twenty-nine saw-whets were male and 172 were female while
42
were recorded as Unknown sex.

Two of our birds checked in at stations south and southwest in PA and the third
visited a station in Powhatan County, VA about 25 miles west of Richmond. A
saw-whet
banded here in November 2010 was found dead in August 2011 near St. Cyprien,
Quebec.

Hatching year saw-whets were the most numerous at 183 followed by 31 SY (second
year), 26 ASY (after second year) and 3 AHY(after hatching year). Of the ASY's
we
suspected 8 were TY(third year). The 3 AHYs were so recorded as they presented
with
extremely complex molt patterns. Given all the variation from normal patterns
we saw
this year we felt it unwise to record anything older than ASY definitively.
Despite
about 40 years of experience looking at molt limits in raptors and passerines,
we
were unable to comfortably identify a four year old feather under either white
or uv
lighting.

What a wonderful season Thanks to the efforts of the Alabama and Georgia
crews
we now know that Saw-whets migrate with regularity at least that far south. Our
great success was mirrored at many other stations from Canada southward. PA had
a
very intense effort this year (on a night where we banded 40, they almost hit
1,000
aggregate at 13 stations). The mass movement was due to wonderful breeding
season
success and survival as opposed to an irruption die loss of prey base. One can
only
gape in awe at the numbers that moved south this fall!
