[cayugabirds-l] More arrivals
Yesterday I saw & heard a male B ORIOLE in my apple tree. Tho i now have put out oranges on tree branches & dish of jelly, have not seen him. Yesterday evening I had 3 male ROSE BR. GROSBEAKS eating sunflower seeds at back yd feeders. Now today i think I have a 4th individual because this guy, tho all back white & rosy as for a male, has a rather spotty head with remnants of a white eyebrow or line on each side of head. While outside early today, replenishing birdfood in front yard, saw 5 CEDAR WAXWINGS eating the petals of apple blossoms. Watched for awhile & they ate a lot of petals. Something new every day! [cayugabirds-l] more arrivals
Shortly after posting yesterday we had competing song from two Wood Thrush! Hummers due today -we'll see. Some are arriving on the 30 year mean date. some have been as much as 2.5 weeks early and a very few have been a few days late. All in all the mean won't move much if at all. -- John and Sue Gregoire Field Ornithologists Kestrel Haven Avian Migration Observatory 5373 Fitzgerald Road Burdett,NY 14818-9626 N 42 26.611' W 76 45.492' Website: http://www.empacc.net/~kestrelhaven/ "Conserve and Create Habitat" -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] more arrivals; no migrants
These strange blue skies and steady warm but light breezes do not seem to be producing any visible migrants on the ground. As others have noted, territorial arrivals continue to trickle in, but many local birds are still missing. An early morning watch at Myer's Point today produced zero birds on the lake or moving overhead. Two different ORCHARD ORIOLES were singing there — at the entrance house and across the creek on Salt Point. WARBLING VIREOS are in full force. On a loop around the Ithaca airport and surrounding roads, I heard many YELLOW WARBLERs, 5 BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS, quite a few OVENBIRDS, but only 1 REDSTART, 1 YELLOWTHROAT, 1 CHESTNUT-SIDED, 1 GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, and no vireos, thrushes (except 1 HERMIT), tanagers, or orioles. Not a single bird I would consider a migrant, but 8 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS was a nice high count. The only exception to the no-migrant weekend, are BLUE JAYS, which are clearly moving through, with a steady stream of small noisy groups around my yard all day.
