This morning at around 8:30 there was a single Black Vulture at the Tompkins
County recycling center (there may have been others as there was a tree of
vultures out behind the center). What I found interesting is where the black
vulture was. It was sitting on top of the Fork Over Tompkins
At 1320h, my grad student Connor reported that all four cold Black Vultures
were sitting in edge trees/hedges just SW of the leachate ponds at the
Stevenson Road Cornell Composting Facility.
I am afraid all he had to offer was peanuts.

This afternoon, a BLACK VULTURE showed up over the compost piles at Game
Farm Road. It circled for a while, then drifted to the northeast.

At 2:30 today I was just finishing up an hour crow watch at the Cornell compost
facility on Stevenson Road when I noticed that an incoming vulture was a BLACK
VULTURE: short tail, flat and broad wings, and white patches in the primaries.
It then landed in the big lone snag, with 8 Turkey
Anne Clark reports a BLACK VULTURE on the piles and then in a tree at the
compost on Stevenson Road. She doesn't see it at the moment so it may be
airborne but is likely still in the area. Keep an eye out!

I was out in our front yard shortly after 7 PM looking for nighthawks when I
noticed a large, dark bird far to the SE. It was coming slowly toward me
and against the air flow (clouds moving from the NW). It got fairly close,
then suddenly turned about and headed back the way it had come. I
A BLACK VULTURE is currently sitting with many, many Turkey Vultures behind
the piles at the Cornell compost facility off Stevenson Road. A few
juvenile Turkeys around as well, so beware, but the Black stands out as
smaller and differently shapes, with longer legs, all dark head, and white

Now there are TWO Black Vultures here, sitting together on a board fence in
the island of bushes between the two silver canopies on the slope above the
piles. Conditions are a bit mucky in the piles, so looking from Stevenson
might be the way to go, they should be visible from there at the moment.

you see it!

the towers on Mount Pleasant (Town of Dryden) while I was checking
Tree Swallow boxes. No idea if we have one bird hanging around or if

Nancy Chen and I enjoyed a nice but brief morning in the East Hill Orchards
today. The highlight (for me - Nancy just got back from a month in Florida
and was less excited) was prolonged looks at a soaring BLACK VULTURE
immediately overhead for several minutes, then drifting off to the west.
Bob Guthrie and I spent several hours today at Broadway Road, Wayne County
watching the hawks. With the wind it was cold so I'm sorry to say we stayed in
the car most of the time. We might have missed a few hawks this way but we
still enjoyed the show.
