[cayugabirds-l] Eastern Screech Owl 2/12/16
Hi everyone, This morning I was skateboarding around the neighborhood, with my dad running after me. Along Siena Drive, near Northeast Elementary, we noticed that there was a woodlot with a few dead trees, some with very "owly-sized" holes. There were chickadees mobbing one of the holes, and we both thought there was a fairly high chance that there was an owl in it. Around 5:30 PM, we went back to the area, still with a skateboard, but also with a camera and binoculars. Sure enough, there was one EASTERN SCREECH-OWL in the hole. We got pretty good looks at the owl. The hole was close to the road and not too obstructed by branches. And the owl was not spooked by our presence. However, it was somewhat dark outside, so our pictures weren't fantastic. Here is a link to one of our good ones: https://goo.gl/photos/nKtHrP4HYdnVNCuz6 . The owl is on Siena Drive close to the turn off to St. Catherine's Circle. We assume that the land where the owl is doesn't belong to any homeowners, but there shouldn't be a need to walk into the woods to see the bird. Good birding, Tilden and Mark Chao P.S. The screech-owl was in the tree cavity opening again this morning. Last year it seemed to most frequently appear in the opening when it was sunny, so I was skeptical this morning, but it was there. Thanks, Dave, for reminding us about this owl! The cavity is about half way up a tree at the back edge of the parking lot on the left side of the Dandy Mart on Rt. 79 in the village of Slaterville Springs (in the town of Caroline). If you don't see a dark cavity, then the owl is probably in the opening, well camouflaged. The cavity faces the parking lot and is easily seen from one of the parking spaces on the left side of the building. [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Screech-Owl, Northern Harrier, Pairegrines
Today I had occasion to stop with the taxi at the Dandy Mini-Mart in Slaterville Springs. It being a cold sunny winter day, I thought to check the cavity in the tree behind the store which John Confer tipped us off to months ago. I guessed right, and added EASTERN SCREECH-OWL to my Office List as well as my 2015 Basin List. I'm also thrilled for Mark & family that their box is occupied despite a recent casualty in the neighborhood. Another cool Office Bird today was a male NORTHERN HARRIER on McClintock Road by Livermore Road just west of the Village of Dryden. It was moving quickly south while facing more west, such were the weather conditions and its flight style. Although I had previously seen Peregrine from my Office windows this year, I was thrilled to see the male and female perched on the SE corner of Bradfield Hall this morning, he on a ledge directly below her ledge. Has anybody seen them perched on the same ledge together, or actively courting or copulating? Is there an appropriate bit of gravel somewhere atop Bradfield for them to nest? If not, will somebody please quick put a box up for them, and include a camera? By the way, have the Red-tailed Hawks been nearby? What sort of inter-species interactions have there been? Do the Red-tailed Hawks show interest in last year's site? Is Cornell/CLO loyalty/investment in the Red-tailed Hawks so great as to preclude encouraging the Peregrines? [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Screech Owl
I had left the window open yesterday night and was facing the window and sleeping to catch the cool breeze. Early morning at 1.50 am I was woken up to a call of Eastern Screech Owl. After a few seconds it became louder, so I went to pick up my recorder and tried to record the sound, to my dismay I found both Hard drive and SD card were both full. So I deleted some files and then tried to record. Just then the my battery power went low and started flashing. Finally I gave up and just listened to it calling. First it did several winnowing and did tooting for quite some time. It continued till 10 minutes or so. Then I got desperate. So I decided to use my android note pad with a video recorder. I was just about to hit the video switch on, when the bird decided it had enough and it stopped. What is interesting to me and bothering question is did I wake up to the call of owl? Or was it by chance I woke up and heard the call. What I recall is when I woke up I was listening to the call of the owl. So it seems I was conscious of bird calling already when I came to my senses. So this brings another question, so if I knew I was listening to the owl, did my brain wake me up so that I could hear it? I don't wake up for the truck passing by or a dog barking, which occur through out the night everyday. So how does our brain know that we are interested in listening to owl call so it wakes us up and we don't care for dog barking or a passing truck so our brain just does not wake us up to perceive those sounds. So it is amazing if our brain wakes us up as we are quite interested in listening to owl calls! Oh it is all confusing to explain! Eastern Screech owl continued for another an hour or so calling intermittently, then probably I fell asleep. In the morning I was worried all my moths would be gone. To my surprise there were a lot more Catocala spp. than ever I have seen. I counted 17 of them sprinkled on both sides of the sheet including at least five species, one of which was new to me. Black Walnuts seem to host for the most of the species and I do have plenty of them, thanks to the squirrels. While I was photographing moths a large group of BOBOLINKS flew overhead in the fog. The flight continued for at least five minutes or so. Or at least some birds might have evolved to feed on these caterpillars. We all had a good listen, but no stalking attempts here. This morning as I left the house at 7am, a Northern Harrier was cruising the fields at the intersection of E Miller and Nelson Rds in Danby. Dave Nutter's comment about the Eastern Screech-owl reminded me that I had made a futile attempt a couple weeks back to 'see' one in the woods behind my house. He (or she) was tootling, probably around 9pm, very close by in the trees. It was clear, so I hoped for a silhouette, but no such luck. The owl stopped tootling as soon as it detected me, so I never located it, but was pleased to think I had been at least within 30 or so feet of it for a change. Many times, they've either tootled or screeched in the middle of the night, either while I was out with the telescope or sleeping with the window open, and being a light sleeper, often awakened by them. I've recorded them several times, but never a glimpse or overflight. But last night, I finally got my first visual! He started tootling while there was still about 10 min of light. I heard it through the open living room window, dashed for the binocs, and moved fast across the lawn, then went into 'deer stalking' mode, 2 or 3 slow steps, pause, repeat til I was 20' into the woods, then started scanning the mid-upper story where the sound was. Again, he spotted and/or heard me and shut up, but I crept forward a few more feet, scanned again, and BINGO, got the puffy little guy sitting on a bare, rather steeply inclined branch about 25' up. As this tree was downslope, he was probably about 15' higher than me. He immediately turned sideways to me and horripilated which made him look the size of a small Great Horned. Much bigger than I had anticipated. He stayed silent, so I tried a warbling whistle. Bad idea: he took off like a SHOT. I mean shot from guns: didn't even see a wing-flap and he shot out of view. So don't whistle.
