[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks and other observations

2019-04-21 Thread Andrew David Miller
This morning while running along Midline Rd there was a small flock of Evening
Grosbeaks feeding in small fruit trees about 1/10th of a mile past Hunt Hill Rd
as you head towards Irish Settlement on the left side of the road. There were
at least 10 females and 2 stunning males.

Other birds heard or seen in the area of Ringwood and Midline this morning were
numerous Ruby crowned kinglets, eastern towhees, field sparrows, house wrens
(new arrivals last night), two pileated woodpeckers, and the usual assortment
of common birds.

At least three Pine siskens continue to visit our feeders along with our usual
families of purple finches and goldfinches. A single red breasted nuthatch
also remains a constant visitor. Fox, song, chipping, and white-throated
sparrows are numerous in numbers at the feeder area.

Cheers-
Andrew Miller

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks in NE Ithaca, Wed 12/5

2018-12-05 Thread Mark Chao
On Wednesday morning, eight EVENING GROSBEAKS (1 adult male) visited our
yard in northeast Ithaca. Besides black oil sunflower seeds in our hopper
feeder, they also ate maple seeds and maybe buds or seeds of a couple other
tree species. Mostly, they just perched quietly in the sunshine. This is
the first time we’ve ever seen Evening Grosbeaks in our yard in our 17+
years in Ithaca.

Also this morning (9:05 AM), Wesley Hochachka saw at least two female
Evening Grosbeaks in Sapsucker Woods in an ash tree east of the building by
the north-side feeder station, but they flew off somewhere within about a
minute.

eBird shows at least a couple dozen Evening Grosbeak records around
Tompkins County since November 2018, including more than a few this week so
far, including a county high count of 44 (13+ adult males) by Jay McGowan
along Irish Settlement Road a couple of days ago.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] EVENING GROSBEAKS - Ringwood Rd

2018-11-01 Thread Dave Nutter
The pair of EVENING GROSBEAKS was present between 11:30am & noon, in the Ash
Tree on the corner a couple times, but spending more time around the green
feeder on a pole in the back yard, visible through a mostly bare tree from
Mineah near the culvert. The feeder is designed for small birds, and it shuts
off access to the seeds if too much weight is on the perch rail, such as a big,
scary, voracious Common Grackle or Blue Jay. An Evening Grosbeak does not weigh
too much. However, they are gregarious. When the male was alone he could feed,
but when the female fluttered down and he instantly fed her what he already had
in his bill, he turned back to find there was no more food available. The
Grosbeaks perch in various places nearby, or on top, and they keep trying the
feeding perch, which works individually until a Black-capped Chickadee arrives
to briefly grab a seed. Then the hatch closes, and does not reopen until the
Grosbeak leaves. So the Evening Grosbeaks are finding seeds in the grass below.

They flew off to the west, landed on the tree ridge in Ringwood Reserve and

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks in Brooktondale

2016-11-03 Thread Melissa Groo
Four evening grosbeaks made an appearance at my feeder this morning at
8:30. In Brooktondale, on Shindagin Hollow Road next to the forest. Joy!

Ps. I have a show opening at Mockingbird Paperie on the commons tomorrow
during first Friday gallery night. From 5 to 8, with wine, cheese, and
talented flutist Timothy Larkin playing. If you can't make it, the show is
up through the end of December. And the store carries my cards throughout
the year.

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks and more (pics)

2011-02-22 Thread Raghuram Ramanujan

Following Matt Young's reports of Evening Grosbeaks from Shackham Rd. on
Saturday (thanks Matt!), I made the drive up to Morgan Hill State Forest last
morning. And sure enough, the birds were exactly where he described. During the
~2 hours I was there, the feeders hosted ~20 EVENING GROSBEAKS and ~100 COMMON
REDPOLLS. The light falling snow made up for the flat light.

http://rramanujan.smugmug.com/Birds/Cardinals-Grosbeaks/7409232_mkyFg#1194652602_PNNeX

On the way back, I took a detour via Summerhill. The Hovel Chalet held only the
common winter feeder birds. Also, the huge redpoll flock that has been reported
from Fire Ln E on Lake Como Road in the recent past was nowhere to be found
(though I didn't stick around very long). On Lane Rd in Locke, right next to
the dairy farm, I found a field that hosted many hundreds of Starlings and ~25
HORNED LARKS.

http://rramanujan.smugmug.com/Birds/Larks-Swallows/8245552_LKRN8#1193458803_7zipB

And this morning, I decided to use the bright sunny (albeit quite frigid)
conditions to make the drive up to Aurora/Union Springs to see if I could
photograph the large waterfowl rafts that were reported over the weekend. On
Lake Rd in Aurora, I did find one large raft. This picture captures roughly 10%
of the total raft, and I'd estimate there are ~300 in this picture, which puts
the raft size at ~3000 REDHEADS. There was also a *much* larger raft in the
middle of the lake (easily 10k+ birds), visible from various points along the
shoreline in and around Union Springs, but too far out to photograph.

http://rramanujan.smugmug.com/Birds/Waterfowl/7409392_5Wsjf#1195817823_hMAM9

All in all, a quite productive 24 hours!

Raghu

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks in CNY

2011-01-08 Thread grosb...@clarityconnect.com
Hello all,

I had to follow up on a project today, so I searched all the Southern
Highland hotspots for Evening
Grosbeaks.

Shackham Rd at the Cortland/Onondaga County line: 30+ EVENING GROSBEAKS and
Common redpolls
and a few Pine Siskins

Jones Rd --Cazenovia, Madison County: 40+ EVENING GROSBEAKS and Common
Redpolls.

Paradise Hill Rd -- DeRuyter, Madison County: ~70 EVENING GROSBEAKS and 30
Common Redpolls and
afew Pine Siskins

Lake Rd -- McDonough, Chenango County: 40+ EVENING GROSBEAKS and Common
Redpolls.

Of course there's a flock of ~25 EVENING GROSBEAKS hanging out on Fillmore
Rd Cayuga County. If
they aren't at this house they are often just down the hill at the Eaton Rd
feeders --this is also just in
the basin.

The only place I struck out was at the feeders in Northwest Corners,
Chenango County. Small flocks of
5-30 Common Redpolls were present at every feeder station I stopped at
today.

cheers,
Matt Young

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks- Richford

2010-11-08 Thread Drew Fulton
I had two females at my feeders on Etna road in Ithaca this morning as
well. We had 8+ Pine Siskins about a week ago but haven't seen them
since. We also have had 4 Fox Sparrows that are feeding on the ground
under the feeders for the last 3 or 4 days. I can barely keep the
feeders full!

Best,
Drew

Hi All,

away!

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks

2010-11-07 Thread wroberts
We had the good fortune of discovering a pair of Evening Grosbeaks at our
feeders on Sunday morning;
this is the first visit of Evening Grosbeaks to our feeders in 20 years. What
a thrill. I'll wait patiently for the
next eruption. Bill Roberts

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks

2010-10-25 Thread Kevin Cummings
Hi all,

I was surprised and very excited to find a flock of at least 13 EVENING
GROSBEAKS (5 M, 8 F) in our yard on Beam Hill Rd on Sat AM. They seemed to
split their time between eating at our feeders and feeding in deciduous
trees (mostly beech, I believe). We have been in this house since Jan of
2002, and this was our first yard sighting. About half as many were evident
on Sun AM, but I didn't see any today. Other recent highlights include
several PURPLE FINCHES for the last week or so, as well as a RUFFED GROUSE
on Fri.
