[cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Preserve E Meadowlarks, W Snipe etc
A walk around the Goetchius Preserve this morning turned up the following: 3 Eastern Meadowlarks flying around as a group, several times, with lots of dt calls. Sometimes appeared to be chasing. Singing also heard. Wilson's Snipe heard winnowing briefly a couple of times. American Kestrel female within the deer exclosure fence. Savannah Sparrows, several singing. Swamp Sparrow singing. American Pipit heard flying overhead (also heard on Mt Pleasant yesterday evening) And the usual suspects... And at home, the ground under my feeders is HOPPING with dozens of White-throated Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos! SPRING! [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Preserve - woodcock, snipe
Curious about WOODCOCKS and weather conditions, I went to the Goetchius Preserve this evening from about 8:00 until 8:30. Preserve is on Flatiron Rd., Town of Caroline, just off Rt. 79 E. Heavy overcast, a spitting rain, breeze from the NW, temp. around 40 F. I parked at the small lot next the sign, and walked out a ways past the 2 ponds. This reduces the volume from the SPRING PEEPERS, but does not help with the continuous din from the CANADA GEESE just to the west. The woodcocks didn't seem to mind the weather; I watched and listened to at least 4. A couple were dancing right overhead. A SNIPE winnowed continuously for several minutes, and a KILLDEER flew over once. It's not really too wet, unless you fall in the creek or ponds in the dark. [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Preserve Solitary Sandpiper great Snipe display
I spent a little over an hour at the FLLT Goetchius Preserve this morning, and saw/heard a number of nice birds: Brown Thrasher pair, one singing up high while the other foraged on the ground underneath it Eastern Meadowlark pair (one singing) Ruby-crowned Kinglets Shorebirds: Killdeer Great Lesser Yellowlegs (nice to see them together and notice the size difference) SOLITARY SANDPIPER (don't recall this species being mentioned before, but maybe it has…certainly a first of the year for me) I had my best look ever of Wilson's Snipe displaying: I heard the bird (maybe two) calling within minutes of arriving. Later on my way back I was admiring the shorebirds, when a bird flew fairly low down across my field of view and I could easily see its long bill. Watching it through binocs, I saw it flip up its wings briefly in flight then begin calling, then it began circling higher and higher into the sky and I was able to follow it as it intermittently spread its tail in flight and that's what's responsible for the winnowing sound. It was still displaying when I left 10-15 minutes later. A buteo was circling overhead against a white/grey sky, giving few ID cues, but it DID have a bold white subterminal band on the underside of its tail, plus in my mind's eye I saw darkish underwings, so I'm going to call it a Red-shouldered Hawk. Sparrows were well represented with Savannah, Song, Field, and Swamp all heard singing. And the usual suspects... Quite a delightful outing. [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Preserve
Susie I stopped by the FLLT's Goetchius Preserve (Flatiron Rd., Caroline) late this afternoon. Bulldozers have been busy creating 2 new ponds in the former large field. We plan to go back this evening looking for woodcock and snipe. Boots recommended if you plan to walk from the parking lot to what remains of the field. Bird finds included a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and 6 KILLDEER. S. S. [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Preserve, if not bored with loony loon and more
Hi Folks, At a minimum: the loon arrived two weeks ago and we tried to capture it but instead we drove it down stream; it came back to the pol just below the road culvert and was photographed by Melissa Groo; it went away but on Sat morning (30 April), I saw it in the culvert outflow close to the road; it soon went back down stream and has not been seen since (to my knowledge). Clearly, it goes both ways through the second culvert downstream from the road culvert. We can hope it finds enough food in the creek and that its wing heals before fall freeze. (Perhaps other thoughts and observations about the loon could go off the busy listserve, always excepting unusually neat stuff, but I would enjoy hearing them at con...@ithaca.edu) At Goetchius: (First, FYI the owners of the original parcel purchased for the Preserve were the Goetchius, pronounced somewhat like getchas.) Steve Kress pointed out to me that there were Solitary Sandpipers in the newest wetland restoration and I later counted at least 4 and probably 5. I watched them successfully feeding frequently in the mud only a few months after being churned over by bulldozers. I hesitate to mention the next because I used playbacks of Virginia Rail at the obvious, accessible sites near the road. You may enjoy knowing the results. I've done this with other species of birds whose nesting success I was monitoring and I think a few times with playbacks doesn't discourage most species of birds from their nesting activities. It is possible that dozens of people doing the same would chase the birds away. So, the truth is this is sort of like don't do what I did, or go find your own place to do it. I got responses from four individual birds, including one pair that came in close together. No Soras responded to a Sora playback, although the Virginia did respond to the Sora playback. So far, I've only heard one meadowlark at a time. It is nice to hear that others have seen a few bobolinks back on the preserve. [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Preserve
I was at the Goetchius Preserve between 7 and 8 this evening. Highlights for me were two WOODCOCK and one WILSON'S SNIPE. Dozens of ducks came flying in as the light faded. Most of them arrived after it was too dark for me to be able to identify them reliably, though I suspect that most of them were WOOD DUCKS. There was also a flock of sixty or so TREE SWALLOWS feeding over the fields, helping to make it feel rather like a summer evening. Sydney Penner 43 N. Landon Rd.
