[cayugabirds-l] Ovenbird, etc
Yesterday while jogging before the storm, I flushed a small bird in the woods which looked to have the orange crown of an ovenbird, but couldn't be sure without binoculars. It was near another small bird on the ground pumping its tail, which I assumed was a Louisiana waterthrush. This morning I heard my FOY "teacher teacher teacher" song. Also had two brown thrashers, one singing loudly and proudly while a second seeming to slowly slink away in reluctant resignation. Two hairy woodpeckers were chasing each other all over. Also FOY catbird for me yesterday. And a field sparrow was singing for much of the day yesterday outside my "office" window. [cayugabirds-l] Ovenbird at Sapsucker Woods East Trail
This morning Ken and I took a walk at Sapsucker Woods, starting at the East Trail. We heard then saw, an Ovenbird singing near the trail just beyond the Woodleton boardwalk -- our first of year. We also saw Northern Waterthrush at the Sherwood Observation platform, and heard another singing later from the Woodleton area. We also saw Yellow and Yellow-rumped warblers on the Wilson Trail, and also saw Cooper's, Sharp-shinned and Broad-winged Hawks. Some of the Ruby-crowned Kinglets came close enough for us to see the little sliver of red on the crown. [cayugabirds-l] Ovenbird nocturne
I went to bed last night with my windows open, and at 11:40 I was surprised to hear an ovenbird's evening song -- a complicated melody reminiscent of winter wren with a few teachers thrown in. It kept me awake listening for more, but the bird did not sing again. A group of at least three ravens seem to have claimed the Commonland territory as their own. [cayugabirds-l] Ovenbird behind Corson/Mudd Hall
This afternoon, after walking out the back door of Corson/Mudd Hall on Cornell Campus, I saw an Ovenbird scurrying around below the white pine near the building. This was a first for me this year, so I thought I'd let others know. I've certainly never seen one there before! Mundy birds and RE: [cayugabirds-l] Ovenbird behind Corson/Mudd Hall
Actually a few years ago one got inside Corson Mudd and was there for a day on fourth floor and next day morning, I think John Hall released it out after some struggle to catch it. I hope he is not the same guy! I did my Mundy lunch walk today. There were at least 15 Yellow-rumped warblers and many bright males. Some of them were taking bath in the plantations stream. They were flitting on the ground looking for insects. A pair of Eastern Phoebe also were busy feeding. Best view was of a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS feeding on a dead fallen tree. I was less than 10 ft away from them and watched them for a long time. Actually, I got tired of watching them. They were finding something juicy at the base of the trunk. I was watching them with my 7x25 and they looked stunning even in that crapy binoculars! [cayugabirds-l] Ovenbird behavior in protecting nest
Sara Jane treated me to Father's Day by taking me to Oquaga Creek St. Park for a sumptuous picnic. This park is about 10 miles SSE of Bainbridge. I, of course, did a little birding. Before that, however, we played frisbee golf (the course is inside the woods). We often missed the fairway with our tosses and had to traipse in amongst the trees and shrubs. On one occasion, as I was getting to my errant frisbee, we were startled by some creature scurrying away from me along the ground. We were very surprised when this little creature turned out to be a female OVENBIRD. I was almost standing on the nest (gasp!!). As we thought about her behavior, it became apparent to us that by her literally running (not flying) away from the nest along the ground, any predator's attention would be completely focused on her, thereby sparing the nest from predation. As it turns out, ovenbirds were literally everywhere in this park. As I was hiking along a trail, another female went scurrying away along the ground. I was able to find her nest as well. How's that for good fortune. Two nests in one day!! I've only seen one before this, and that time our son, Chris, found it for me. Unless you're right on top of a nest, you can be hard-pressed to find one. Although sorely tempted, we did not touch or investigate the nests, which to nobody's surprise are in the shape of a dutch oven. Larry -- W.
