We had three red-winged blackbirds this morning, and later, five grackles.  I 
think we had three RWBL on Monday, for 20 seconds, but they flew away before I 
could get a good look!

It's confusing, but try this:

In ebird.org, go to Explore, then click Species Maps, enter the name of 
species, then under Date, alter the search parameter to Current Year, and 
specify Dec-Feb, while leaving the Location blank, and you get:

This morning I watched the feeders at the Montezuma Audubon Center for about 5 
minutes. The usual crew was there, including a RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD. I tried to 
manipulate eBird to tell me the most recent sightings in this area, and I 
couldn’t figure it out. I know it’s not unusual to see RWBBs at Montezuma but I 
was surprised to see one now. I thought that had all left us for warmer climes!

I also saw one of “our” resident adult bald eagles soaring high over the 
grassland to our north.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-winged Blackbird

The first sound I heard as I set foot outside this morning was a RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD singing from my neighbor's tree. I knew a few had come back and I've been keeping an eye out, but I didn't expect my first of the year to be a yard bird. It was disorienting, as often happens when I first hear a species' song after months' absence. First I have to wake up a disused part of my brain.--Dave Nutter

I heard my first Red-winged black birds singing on Sunday. They may have been 
singing earlier in the week but I was still in hibernation mode. There were at 
least 3 in my backyard in West Groton. Also, I had a swarm of little bugs 
drowned in a water bucket I left on the sidewalk overnight.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-winged Blackbird

With the release of the eBird yard/patch list feature, I decided to
"adopt" the Durland preserve along Ellis Hollow Creek Rd. as my patch.
and visit it at least once a week.  It will be interesting to hone in
on a single place and watch the avifauna change during the year.
Once I started, it got me thinking about whether there would be
interest in a "new" competition where interested birders would "adopt"
a FLLT or other conservation oriented property.  We would benefit by
friendly competition and birding these properties more frequently and
the organizations managing the properties would benefit by having bird
counts done throughout the year.Thoughts?

Today was the first visit with American Robin ( 40+ birds  ) and a
single RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD.
