[cayugabirds-l] Upland sandpipers

2022-05-07 Thread Peter Saracino
Folks after many visits I just now (8:20 a.m.) got the upland sandpipers.
Two of them walking left in the middle of the field on the east side of
Thorpe Rd. (Just west of the airport) Just a bit north of the last (white)
house!!
Boy they sure can be sneaky.right under one's nose but out of sight.

[cayugabirds-l] Upland Sandpipers?

2022-04-27 Thread Dave Nutter
I was talking to Reuben Stoltzfus today. He often calls when he suspects he has
found a new species for the Cayuga Lake Basin for the year, and he is often the
first to find an Upland Sandpiper at their traditional site, the Lott Farm
(access by permission). It’s located at the south edge of Seneca Falls, east of
NYS-414 and north of Martin Road near the Finger Lakes Regional Airport. We’re
a couple weeks overdue for Upland Sandpiper, and he hadn’t reported, and I know
he’s busy, so I asked if he had been looking. Yes, he has been looking but not
finding any. Last year he only saw 1, and eBird only has 2021 reports from
there of a singe bird from April 18-26. It’s looking like maybe that last
remaining reliable location in the Basin for breeding Upland Sandpipers may
have died out. Keep your eyes and ears open, both there and at any large
grassland area. We may only have them as migrants, if at all, from now on.
Meanwhile, although I haven’t been there, I assume the Lott Farm is still good
for lots (!) of other grassland species.

[cayugabirds-l] Upland Sandpipers

2020-04-20 Thread Dave Nutter
Reuben Stoltzfus reports 2 Upland Sandpipers in their only reliable location in
our area, the Lott Farm (access by permission), which is on Martin Rd at the
south border of Seneca Falls and west of the Finger Lakes Regional Airport. The
birds were calling and foraging, and as yet they are taller than the grass. He
had also checked Friday but did not find any. This is the first report of the
species in the Cayuga Lake Basin this year of which I am aware, and there are
no eBird reports in NYS yet.

2019-04-22 Thread psaracin
Just a brief point of clarification concerning my recent post about upland
sandpipers on the Lott Farm. I went there on a tip from Dave Nutter who said
Reuben had seen 2 of them the day before. Somine was NOT the first sighting
of the year. That belongs to Reuben S.Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Upland Sandpipers

2019-04-19 Thread bob mcguire
Thanks Pete, for posting this information on the newly-arrived UPLAND
SANDPIPERS at the Lott Farm in Seneca Falls.

Now that “Uppie” season is with us again, it is worth noting that, while the
Farm is private property, the owners (primarily, I believe, Mrs Lott) do
welcome birders to drive through in search of the birds. However, they request
that one phone before entering - simply to let them know that you will be
there. Call 315 568-9501 and tell whomever answers that you are in
such-and-such car and will be looking for the sandpipers. Or leave a message.

Good birding!

[cayugabirds-l] Upland Sandpipers

2012-08-10 Thread Jay Powell
There was 3 upland sandpipers in Seneca Falls at the fair grounds. The birds
were all the way in the back NorthEast corner. Empire State farm days are
wrapping up there equipment too. I'm surprised to see the birds still there in
very short grass. Very close looks at 20 feet.

[cayugabirds-l] Upland Sandpipers Empire Farm days Grounds. Montezuma Puddlers' Marsh Saturday evening. Visitor Center shorebird habitat

2011-07-17 Thread Michael and Joann Tetlow
I thought I copied this to Cayuga Birds last night:

Seneca Falls Fairgrounds, Martin Rd., Seneca, US-NY Jul 16, 2011 4:30 PM -
5:10 PM

Upland Sandpiper 17 Appeared to be 1 family group of 6 in deeper grass
on north edge another family group of 4 near the red building in the center
of the grounds. The remaining birds were readily visible in short grass

Horned Lark 14 about half were juveniles

We arrived at Puddler's Marsh around 6:30. In spite of 90 degrees there was
no heat shimmer and good light. Great numbers of birds. Highlights are as
follows:

1 Stilt Sandpiper

1 Short-billed Dowitcher

2 Semi-palmated Sand.

4 Pectoral Sand.

1 White-rumped Sand.

4 Solitary Sand.

30 Spotted Sand.

250 Killdeer all over the mudflats at KM

30 Greater Yellowlegs

~1000 Lesser yellowlegs

500 Least Sand.

21 great Egrets flew in around 7:40 as did numbers of Great-blue
Herons until they totaled over 120.

We could not find the Wilson's Phalarope or Baird's but I bet they're still
there.

Our persistence was rewarded by 2 otters that came out and started feeding
on the water near the N-NE shore. We no longer cared about the birds we may
have missed. Mike and Joann Tetlow

In addition to the above the Clay-colored Sparrow was singing on and off at
King Road even at 4pm.

They have flooded the visitor center pool and it already attracted 30
Killdeer, 1 Solitary Sand., 12 lesser and I Greater Yellowlegs last evening.

Even though all 21 Great Egrets were in the air at once no wing tags were
visible.

Mike and Joann Tetlow
