Thanks Wesley.
I don't recall for sure if Merlin IDed Cackling Goose more than once, but my 
vague memory is that it did.  The recording is about 2 ½ minutes long, and in 
replaying it, Merlin IDed Cackling at least twice.

Based on my understanding about how Merlin Sound ID works, in my opinion the 
answer to your question is "no".  You are wise to not blindly trust that Merlin 
Sound ID found a real Cackling Goose in the flock of geese that you had near 
your house.  There are two aspects of how Merlin Sound ID works that are behind 
my opinion:

  1.  Merlin Sound ID scans through recordings using 3-second-long subsets of 
an entire recording, and within each of these 3-second clips, it assigns each 
vocalization that it can identify to its most likely species.  So, all it would 
take is for one Canada Goose to give a slightly "off" vocalization a single 
time,  or just the right interference from background noise (the microphones 
are phones pick up all sorts of background noise) and "Cackling Goose" could 
pop up as being identified.  You didn't say whether you keep seeing Cackling 
Goose being repeatedly identified, or just a single time during the time that 
Merlin Sound ID was running.  I would tend toward skepticism of any ID that was 
made a single time during the period that Merlin Sound ID is running.

  1.  Behind the curtain, Merlin Sound ID isn't assigning a single species to 
each vocalization that it picks up.  Instead, for every separate vocalization, 
Merlin Sound ID is calculating how close that vocalization is to resembling 
every species for which the Sound ID model has been trained.  So, it is 
possible that Sound ID will consider two species to be very similar in 
likelihood, but the Merlin app only shows you the most likely species 
regardless of whether the most likely, and the second most likely, species 
might both have a very high likelihood of being the species that made the 
vocalization.  In other words, the presentation of information from the Merlin 
Sound ID model can lead to a false impression of certainty in an identification.

   Basically, as with interpretation of output from any machine-learning model, 
human intelligence is required in order to assess whether or not artificial 
stupidity has occurred.

Yesterday on Lower Lake Road, Livia and I found an apparent GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED x CANADA GOOSE hybrid. I've only seen this cross a few times,
so it was nice to see one at somewhat closer range and note the smaller
proportions and more extensive white face than the more commonly
encountered domestic Graylag x Canada crosses.

I live on Canandaigua Lake & we can get flocks of several thousand & in fact a 
sizable flock was around most of this winter. Seneca Lake can also have decent 
numbers but neither lake has the incredible numbers Cayuga Lake gets. I’m not 
sure of numbers on the other Finger Lakes but eBird records would give an idea.

I've been hearing lots of Canada geese at night here, over Sheffield Road. As 
late as 11 pm.

This morning, I saw a large V of Canada geese, then one of Canada geese with 4 
white and I assume snow geese leading it, then a large sloppy V (I notice the 
snow geese have sloppier Vs than Canada geese) overhead.

FOY 3 male red-winged blackbirds yesterday here on Sheffield Road. 

Flocks of blackbirds every day for several weeks. I think many are starlings.

Two days ago, a cardinal pair mating and then another arriving so that the 2 
males were chasing each other around.

A pair of bluebirds today, but they've been here all winter.

Despite stiff NW winds yesterday afternoon (Tu 17 Mar), about 3:30pm I saw 
several flocks of SNOW GEESE totalling about 270 birds powering north over 
downtown Ithaca. Later I noticed a mixed flock of CANADA GEESE  SNOW GEESE 
northbound over my house.

Sandy Wold mentioned on Sunday afternoon on Yale Farm Rd, again in stiff NW 
winds the initial flocks of 180 westbound SNOW GEESE. During our stay several 
more flocks followed, totalling over 800.

Still more flocks of geese are entering the Cayuga Basin at West Danby this 
morning. We have clear skies overhead, but a heavy band of lake effect snow is 
passing on our eastern horizon, and its fringes are lit by the rising sun. The 
distant flocks are highlighted against these bright clouds; their northward 
advance is noticeably slowed by the strong headwind.

I was out about 9am and saw and heard many hundreds of Snow Geese flying
south, so if Ellie saw them in TBurg about 10am, there must have been
thousands across a broad front.  Shirley and I were on Sheffield Rd about
2pm and saw hundreds of Canadas and somewhat fewer Snows in the cornfields
around Iradell Rd.  So maybe not all the geese were headed south of the snow
belt.

A good sized flock of snow and canada geese at the corner of Perry City and
Dubois Rd at 4pm. Both pahses of snow geese there and close to the road.
A Harrier flew over my car on Perry City rd just west of Rt 96.
